Gold detecting question

Heres the Scenario. Small nugget gold close to the surface to 12 inches or more below the surface. What do I need to listen for. Mainly small gold. Also what kind of VDI's should I avoid, or should I avoid any. What kind of Iron percentage should I avoid digging. I did this a couple days ago in a spot I was sure there was gold and came up empty. However I was running on advice I had recieved about the MXT and was avoiding digging certain signals. This is what I have been told which I am sure is good advice. Dig anything in the vdi gold range as long as it registers below 50% iron content. I was doing something wrong I am sure. All advice will be greatly appreciated.

Jason, here are some tips which will help to enhance your chances of finding gold: in the goldfields, one pretty much has to dig ALL signals produced by actual targets, to recover gold. This is especially true of the faint signals produced by small, or deep, targets. The only exception to this rule are when, on STRONGER signals, produced by larger targets, which clearly register as IRON (negative numbers) on the VDI, can you forego digging up the target. Otherwise, ANY target which gives a consistently positive ("non-ferrous") VDI reading should be dug; the fact is, ALL positive VDI readings can be nuggets, of various sizes. Any faint signal which gives NO VDI reading should be dug as a matter of course. As for the VDI scale, the typical "wheatgrain" size nugget may register +2 to +6 the scale, larger nuggets will read higher. In really "bad" ground the soil mineralization can pull the VDI into the low negative numbers even on small (sub-grain) nuggets. I suggest digging ALL targets which give an iron percentage reading of 70% or less. Listen for faint, but repeatable signals. Use high decibel output headphones. Go slow. Hope this helps; HH Jim

Hi Jason,
It is simple. When detecting gold, all repeatable signals should be dug if at all possible. Work in the Prospecting Mode, and forget about the VDI.
That said, I will often ignore items that give a high iron reading. Or I may even detect for nuggets in Relic Mode. I'll be heading for Ganes Creek in 9 days, and will be running in Relic mode with the disc set at 2.
If you use any discrimination at all while nugget detecting you risk losing gold, plain and simple. Try burying a nugget in high mineral ground. Usually, the deeper it is, the lower the VDI numbers will go, as the machine reads more ground and less nugget the deeper it goes. At some point many nuggets will actually read as iron. The more mineralized the ground, the less reliable the discrimination.
It is all a trade between available time, and amount of trash. If time allows, dig everything. As trash levels rise and time is less available, you can rely more on discrimination. But never fool yourself... you are probably going to pass over nuggets doing this eventually. The more you rely on discrimination, the more likely you will miss gold.
At Ganes Creek I am targeting nuggets weighing 1 oz or more and there is a lot of trash to deal with. The mineralization is very low. The area to detect is vast, and I have 6 days to detect. So I'll be digging solid, clean targets and covering as much ground as possible. Digging everything is not an option as I would waste too much time doing it. And I do not care if I miss smaller nuggets. At least, that is going to be my strategy.
When in doubt, dig it out! How much discrimination you use while nugget detecting simply depends on the situation, but as long as you always remember it is not 100% reliable and that you are trading some lost nuggets for digging less trash, then you can decide for yourself whether the trade is worth it.

It makes sense using the tones more than any other id to hunt because the size shape and makeup up of Gold Nuggets are never the same. The last time I went hunting I didnt dig a lot of the signals I got. I was deterred by the various I.D.s ( or lack of on the faint signthat just didnt add up right to me. I have read all the various posts on headphones and am now in the market for a better pair that enhance the "whispers". Thanks! HH Jason
