Gold coin ID on GTI conductivity scale

New member
Hi, I know this is being optimistic but does anyone know how gold coins ID on the GTI 1500? I've heard that small gold ID's as foil but does anyone know? For example $1 $2.50 $ 5.00 gold coins. I am fairly certain the " bigger" denomination gold will ID higher. But I am really curious where the smaller coins come in at.

Thanks Jason

Gold, is usually mixed with other alloys or metals, and these will alter where the gold will read on the ID/1500. Now, compound this with different %'s of gold ie 10k, 12k,18k & 24k, and it could show up anywhere. But, a general rule of thumb is the higher the content of gold, the lower (left) it will read on the screen. Those nasty pull-tabs will surprise you now and then with a 18 or 24K gold as will a penny reading.

As the saying goes......"Gold is where you find it!"

right , thanks John but the question was about GOLD COINS which are typically 90 % gold 10% copper. Where do they read respectively on the conductivity scale. If any collectors or coin hunters own such coins and could give an account where they ID on their detector that would be most helpful. Again $1, $ 2.50 $5, gold coins where do they ID?

I have 11 gold coins that I have bought with pennies since I started detecting. I tested two of them and also a silver dime to make sure the machine was working properly in the house. The dime read (bell toned) as it should. Now the Russian gold coin is slightly smaller the this 5 Gulden, and both are .900 fine gold. The Russian gold coin read at the bottle cap and the Gulden read as a pull tab. Just as I figured....the higher gold content reads more to the low end of the ID scale, where all the junk is too. Of course this was just an air test, and a gold coin found in the ground might read slightly different.
