Wow, a class ring! My heart stopped! first target was a 1897 Indian head penny, and now this. This is the second class ring I've found. And it's gold, or is it? The more dirt I wipe off the worst it looks. It's badly broken on the back side of the band and the strange part is, it just says "High School". no year, no name of the school. Better luck next time! Go get you some!

Wow, what an Awful way to get your first class ring!

Theres a whole bunch of those junkers out there now a days...I found one modern 'Lustrium' HighSchool ring fresh dropped in a totlot, got a hold of the kid who lost it, and HE didnt even want it back!

At least you broke the ice there, so heres to hoping the next one will be GOLD!:beers:

You can look at this two ways...
You found some fake heartbreaking gold, something that will probably happen again sometime I am sorry to say, or...
You found something pretty rare and are now part of an exclusive club.
I am a member of that club so let me tell you what you have there since I researched them already.
This is actually a salesman's sample high school ring used to show prospective buyers what they will receive if they order a real ring.
Most of the time these are marked 10 or 14k, more often than not they are only plated to keep them looking fresh and that is what yours happens to be.
Put it in the ground and that thin plating won't protect them at all and you see the result.
I assume yours has been in the ground for decades.

I found one that appears to be even a bit more rare and I believe it is also decades old.
Mine is not plated and marked 14k, but it won't even test right for 10k.
Solid or not I suspect it is either 6k or at the most 8k if I am lucky, and mine came out of the ground clean and pretty and I was fooled big time.
Talk about heartbreaking.
Generic looking and says High School just like yours, confusing at first to say the least.

Do a search on Google and you will find a few others have found these fake things and posted about them on different forums but there aren't a lot of them.
As I said... a pretty exclusive club.
Once you get over the disappointment try to embrace the rarity of a find like this and be proud.
I am.

REVIER;
Very interesting reply! My wife guessed the same explanation, and now I'm eating crow. Because I told her she was way off. Oh well, i've learned crow isn't so bad, when your used to eating so often.

My wife was the one that immediately clued me in at first, also.
When it comes to jewelry, especially the shiny yellow stuff, I learned never argue with a woman and her opinion.
Most of them have a 6th sense about this stuff.

That's one of the exciting things about this hobby, surprises are always around the corner (or in the ground!) It always amazes me what we all dig up from time to time!
