Gold chain?

I found a long necklace today that is gold in color while detecting. It is a pretty heavy duty chain. How can I tell if it is pure gold? Thanks.

Unless you want to take it to a jeweler find an obscure spot and make a tiny scratch to see if it's plated.

I have some experience with jewelry. If you own a jewelers loupe, study the clasp area for a karat stamp. If you do not own a loupe, then clean the piece thoroughly and take it in to a jeweler and ask them to look for the mark. If it is gold they are usually stamped. Let us know the outcome.

I found a gold chain when I first started detecting and it was clearly stamped 14k both on the clasp and on the first link attached to the clasp. The other half of the clasp was missing so? Jim
