Gold Bug on a salt water beach - Part 1

OK. Just got back from the first go round with the Gold Bug on one of the salt water beaches I will be detecting all week here at the NJ shore.

All I can say is this is the BEST single frequency detector I have ever used in the wet sand AND suds. I was using the 11 inch DD in both all metal and discriminate mode.

The detector had a ground balance of .7 and ground phase of 0 -1 in the wet sand. Gain was at 100 in both modes. In all metal, my test coins ( dime, nickel, penny) buried in the wet sand, with the suds going over the target, were ID'ing correctly on the arc. Nickel was by far the best target in terms of depth and tone. The nickel in all metal hit at depths 12+ inches easy ( I will do more extensive testing and measuring as I report back), with the tone getting softer and fainter as the target was buried deeper ( and it was going deeper without any help from me due to natural burying process of the waves going over the target).

Running in discriminate mode, gain at 100, discriminate setting at 20, it was SUPER SMOOTH. NO chatter ! The occasional blip or tick, but targets were no mistake. The nickel again was the best target and it ID'd at 56 consistently at depths of 10+ inches EASY. Again, I will push the detector to it's limits depth wise and measure accurately to see the farthest usable/clear depth range.

I was amazed at how stable this detector was with gain at max, discrimination low at 20 and I am VERY happy I can use this machine on the beach.

Will be testing some gold targets later in the week ( I forgot to bring them with me but have to go back home anyway for a few things so I will be bringing them back).

Was testing at high tide, so I will be doing some actual hunting at low tide later tonight.

Now my biggest complaint to Fisher/First Texas....I need a waterproof version of this unit IMMEDIATELY !!!!!!

you're just one of those dealers that always spew agenda based falsehoods so you can buy more ocean front condos and foreign sports cars and vintage guitars and stuff! Who cares that you have more experience than most of us put together? Seriously, Bill...you were spot on correct and I never doubted you for a micro-second! It really is a gem of a detector!!!! :yikes:

...but I can't picture Bill in a foreign sports car !

Thanks Bill for all your advice and insight. Like I told you prior to buying the GB that it had a lot of features I wanted in a detector, and if it could just run somewhat stable in the wet sand, then I would be pleased. Had no doubt about it running well in the dry, as most units do, but even with the suds running over the coil, there wasn't any chatter or erratic behavior in discriminate mode. In all metal you can tell it is very sensitive but it takes a second for it to calm down and run smooth. I even ground balanced it up and down IN the suds and it leveled right off. Didn't even have to use the manual override.

Tide is going out and dead low is around 6:00 or so, and I will be heading back down to the beach an hour prior and hunt for about 2 hours ( hopefully). Will post the results later. The way the beach is near my house, there isn't much left and most of the people now have to congregate up near the dunes so I will hunt some there, but my main interest is to work the wet sand and suds at low and see what I can find.

No sports cars, although a new Cameo would be nice. I guess I will have to stay with my Grand Marque for a while.

No guitars lately, but I did purchase a new Roland Space Echo machine..It's cool :)

Just doin' a little tongue-in-cheek satire there around how some folks view reports from dealers. That's their loss I guess. You talk, I LISTEN. But hey, since you are just rakin' in all those big bucks, I have a nice Sienna Burst American Texas Special Strat and a pristine first year quilt pat pending Tobacco Burst Peavey Wolfgang just waiting to be sent your way. ;)
