Gold Bug 3 (Pro) meter, discrimination and Tone ID explaned

Since I got a couple questions on this and how the tone ID works with the discrimination I will post some pics and try and explain.
Now forgive some of the pics the flash would make some of the greyed out scale dissapear so i had to use it no flash and the pics on the last few are blurry but...you can see the greyed out scale I talk about. Withthe flash on they just dissapeared .

First understand that the discrimination meter runs from 0-100. However it is expanded on the lower end for iron and gold. So...the iron/foil changeover is around 40 on the scale. on most other machines it would be like around 15-20 give or take.

Here is the meter while hunting in disc with no discrimination set. TID of 56 means we hit something around a tab or so. Lower right number displays ) discrimination so...all targets are a regular tone which on the Bug is a high tone.

Here I have just touched the + discrimination pad and the upper scale around the TID scale has illuminated. I just set discrimination to 3 which is displayed in the lower right screen AND the bras on the meter scale have come up to 3. If you can see actually 0-2 is just greyed out not blank..but you will see this better later. So anything in disc range or TID range 0,1 or 2 will now make an iron grunt.

Now I have increased discrimination to 38. This about the range of foil or gold breakover. The range below 38 (0-37) is greyed out meaning all targets here will be a low grunt which is all iron. So foil and up is high tone..iron low.

Now I have increased discrimination up to 62 which is somewhere near zincs think ( give or take). The lower tone now takes from just above small foil to around tabs...so those targets are now w low grunt....but...below around 45 the display is blank meaning nothing responds in this range.
If you noticed the lower tone range encompassed a range of 40 numbers when set to foil. IE...when disc was set to 40 the lower range went from 0-40.
However as you increased the discrimination and got into the higher range the lower tone range shrunk to about 15-20 TID numbers.
Why you ask? Well simple...the machine has alot of iron linearity on the low end for gold prospecting I assume. It is tighter on the higher end. So iron range is well expanded. Foil and gold has a little less range width and then above that the range is more normal to most machines.
Therefore you do not need that lower grunt range to be as wide when you get into the range above gold and it shrinks proportionally as you kick the discrimnation up.
If you were to set the discrimination to like 70 or so the lower tone would now only run a range of like6-10....say 60-70 fow a low grunt and the 70 and above high.
Coins ID in a similar range on the upper end of the scale as other Fishers. So a silver dime is like 85 or so.

Gives some life to the manual. Your first pic also shows the three bars that illuminate when you get a signal.
Looks nice and clean like a well laid out dashboard.

I had no idea it was so involved, reminds me of a couple of the
older adjustable tone break machines from the past.
Gonna keep a close eye on this 'tector, looks like a good one.
Hey Mike, direct me to the link where I can download
the owners manual.
Thanks.

I don't remember the link, Steve.
Send me a PM with your email and I'll send it along until someone or myself finds the link and can post it.

Thanks for sharing this detailed information) This is awesome. I am not going to wait for teh Pro model to come out. I will just purshace the Special Addition

Knowing Fisher....the Pro will ACTUALLY make it to dealers in November. They never hit their release dates ever and usually run months behind. Why miss the summer detecting season for maybes. The SE will be just fine. Again...the Cabelas version blows away anything in the Fisher Teknetics line for depth accept the LTD series.....so............................................................................................................................................................
