Gold Bug 2! Or keep my MXT???

gregp

New member
I am considering selling my MXT and getting a Gold Bug 2. My MXT is a great all around detector but i have an ATPRO that I like better. The only reason to keep my MXT would be for gold only. But, I think the Gold Bug would be better for gold only due to its higher frequency. Any and all opinions would be appreciated.

The gold bug 2 at 71 kh is extremely sensitive to small gold. If it's gold your after that's the machine to get! Holler if I can help!

Wow! One response and it was from a salesman. Maybe the Gold bug is not very popular unit. Oh well.

This is the forum for the new Gb and g2 questions about the gb2 would be better aimed at the classic forum, However Bart said it correct the gb 2 will spank the mxt for small gold.
and the new pro will too. The Gb2 is super sensitive and has no Vdi so you will dig everything including itty bitty pieces of foil lead and so on. If your not a serious every trip gold hunter I would suggest the new pro as it is dual purpose and has a disc system and a good one at that.
Good luck

One other note all these detectors mentioned were designed by the same engineer! HMMM not a coincidence there all good on gold.

Well for sure the Gold Bug-2 at 70 kHz is considered the "flagship" for small gold.
But remember you posted on the wrong forum for your answer. Keep in mind the MXT
and the Gold Bug-2 are like apples and oranges and do not grow on the same tree. But
both are delicious to eat and both are good for you... I like both apples and oranges...

I've owned two MXT's with several coils and did exactly what you are contemplating... (I nugget hunt solely with these machines) Although you lose the visual and the learning curve can be somewhat steep on the GB2 I've never regretted it for nugget hunting. A huge difference for me was the weight over a long day and the exact settings you can master on the GB2. Both are good detectors and both will find gold IF you're over it. As stated above, the GB2 is more sensitive to small pieces. My GB2 sounds off on a .085 gram flake at 4 inches; the MXT would not. Both sounded off on a .151 gram flake. You get up to several gram pieces and just about any decent machine will give you a zip zip.

I belive if your looking 4 gold you use a gold machine.
If your looking 4 coins use a coin machine.
some do both

ohlode... Since about 1962 most of my nuggethunting has been in the mojave desert. Specifically around
Randsburg, Summit and El Paso Mtn range. Most of the nuggets are small so the VLF's are better suited
there. The Gold Bug 2 with the small coil has been a good choice to hunt around old dry washer areas
and the spoil pit around old open vertical shafts sunk into the alluvium by the old timers looking for a pay
streak. However as I hunt around the shafts I keep facing them and stay back from the chollor.

parrott: Haven't hunted where you mentioned. I've hunted the old mining areas west of hwy 62 up north of palm springs a couple of times. Found several small pieces under a gram. The washes were best.
Highlight of my last trip was a big "pink" rattler that you could see from 30 yards away since he stood out sunning on a big limestone rock. Had he been in among the pink quartz, I'd have missed him.
Didn't have my camera so I just walked up and studied him for a time.
I bought a used GB Pro on ebay; waiting for delivery now. Thought it would be interesting to see how it differs from my GB2 with the difference in operating frequency and display.
Good hunting!

I'll find out in a little over a week. 7-10 days in the desert. I'll have both my GB2 and the Pro. Be an interesting comparison... I'll post results.
