Gold Bug 2 Gets 10 Small Nuggets

I ran up north last weekend to check out a claim for a possible suction dredging operation next summer. 400 miles each way so more driving than anything. Still, when I got on location, I was able to do a little metal detecting before dark on an old bedrock bench area above the creek. My first target on literally my first swing was a small gold nugget! It is a schist bedrock with streaks of magnetite in it but I was able to run the Fisher Gold Bug 2 jacked to the max in all metal. I did not have long to detect but got ten little nuggets and maybe 20 little bits of ferrous trash before I set camp for the night. The usual testament to the Gold Bug 2 that all ten together weighed exactly a gram.

Up and back to town the next morning, and it snowed twice on me during the trip. So unfortunately I am about done detecting nuggets for the winter. If I do decide to go dredging at that location next summer there will also be more nuggets waiting to be detected.

I have used the AT Gold and found gold with it. It and the Gold Bug 2 are totally different detectors for different purposes. The Gold Bug 2 is a dedicated prospecting detector and as such has no features intended for anything other than prospecting. It can easilt find gold missed by an AT Pro or almost any other detector for that matter. The only detectors that compare to it are the White's Goldmasters, including the GMT.

The AT Gold is a member of a new class of detectors, the "made to find anything but also good for gold nuggets" class of general metal detectors. These used to be rare units but ever since the White's MXT came out and proved to be very popular it now seems like everyone is making these things. The MXT was unique at the time in being a good nugget detector with a digital target id readout. Minelab has a similar offering now in the X-Terra 705, Fisher the F75 and Gold Bug Pro, and now Garrett with the AT Gold. What makes the AT unique compared to the others is the fact it is waterproof.
