Gold at +0 VDI Reading?

EasySwing

New member
I read on another forum that a guy hit a gold ring with a stone in it reading at +0 VDI showing foil on his M6.

Has anyone found gold at this reading? I always dismiss a signal at this range and move on to other targets.

On another note I have never hit a ring in C/J mode showing Ring and a vid at about +45. What say you old timers about this reading?

Marty

Hi, I hunt in Cj mode all of the time, better depth & once u know the vdi in your area ur on the go. As for rings most of the rings (gold) I find are the same as a nickle here vdi 20 & they do not bounce around. I have found some at 32, 42, & the best one I have found did read foil but it had a different sound, not the crackel sound u get with pop tops. I don't know if there was some trash around the ring but just because of the sound I dug it. turned out to be a 1/2 caret white gold ring. The one thing I have noticed is that trash will jump all over the palce if u watch your vdi, & square tabs are always 22. The rings I have found will give a constant reading. Gold & silver even the cheap bling will give a constant reading. Hope this helps I am not the ring master but I have found a few.

Thanks Bula,

It always amazes me each time I hit a ring. I am always expecting a good find, but when I hit I am always surprised. I will check out more of the foil range. I wish gold would come in at a higher range though. Did your c/j mode ever say ring on the display?
Marty

I have found thin 14k Necklace's at 0 vdi and small Rings 1 to 2 grams at 4 i find most gold at 8 to 20 10k will come in higher then 14k. I found 28 Gold Rings in 2010 and all but 2 were over 20 on the vdi.

It is not just small gold and platinum rings that will VDI at 0, bracelets and chains will also read from -10 to +10. It boils down to how much "junk" you are willing to dig to get the goodies. Both of the bracelets VDI around 0. The top one has 106 high quality diamonds and wouldn't you know it, it fits Nancy's wrist...:surprised:

No, the diamond bracelet has 108 high quality diamonds not106. Every gal knows her jewelry. :bouncy: HH, Nancy

I've recovered lots of chains that had a VDI of 0 to 2, but never in the minus numbers. I run with my discrimination accepting from +93 down to -20.

As a rule of thumb I dig all low VDI numbers when hunting active sports fields...... and wide open areas of parks...... basically any place horse play takes place.

my necklaces and small ring finds increased 300% by doing so.

A picture of a rose among thorns.. Nice work Larry

You are a trip Nancy, typical woman,... could spot a CZ from a diamond at 20 paces. Nice rack of diamonds. Thanks everyone for the low VDI tips. I have passed over a bunch of rings, I bet. I try to listen for a solid sound in the lower ranges, but sometimes a crackle does indicate a chain as I have pulled them out with the VDI all over the place. Sort of like a fish on light tackle.

It does depend on how much you want to dig trash, absolutely ! Marty

Very true on the chains and necklaces Marty. The VDI's will not be steady and the audio will sound trashy because the detector sees each segment as a separate target.

Suggest that you maybe air test a few gold rings &/or bracelets and chains (if available) with your machine and see what you come up with. That'll give you a 'real time' VDI indication and sound. Good luck. CCH

Yes that is a good idea CC.

Now would all of you send me your gold rings for the test? A diverse sampling is the best bet, and I will post results on the forum. Of course the rings would be returned in a timely manner. LOL

I have a few to test, but would really like to have the sample size of Larry's as a better test

I have has two gold rings come in as foil. One was a very small 10k toe ring that came in at a VDI of 0 and the other was a 10k finger ring that came in at a VDI of 4. The higher content gold rings came in as pennies. DIG DIG DIG is what i say.

what a a subject of general interest!

in the farms I hunt is hard to find jewelry, but I find lots of relics and coins.
I can still remember I found an earing once with a VDI of 8. I would recommend to use CJ as you can, for heavy iron content go relic
