Gold and Silver Goodies

Treasure Mike

New member
Things were slow at work so I went home a little early. Went to a local sports field about 2 pm before the afternoon soccer and baseball teams showed up. Found the 14 K necklace near the sidelines. It's 24 inches long 6 mm wide and weighs an even 25 grams. It looks like brand new not like the others I have found that had to be cleaned and polished. It was barely under the surface of the turf. I then went over to the wood chip play area and found the silver crucifix and a small metal "Pot Pipe". On the way home I stopped by our local high school and found the silver ring with the blue stone at one end of the football field. Found some clad, about $1.50, and then searched the other end near the goal post and I found the other silver ring hidden in the grass but not buried in the ground. This has been one of the best days that I have had metal detecting. I hope this an indication of things to come now that the weather is getting better and more people are out and about losing goodies. I have to say that the Bigfoot coil is one of the best detecting accessories I have ever bought.

Nice find Mike! What kind of VDI/indications do you get with something like that? Also, solid or jumpy?

I have found two other gold chains of similar size that had VDI readings of 20 and 25. Those chains had been in the ground for awhile and were rough looking until I cleaned them up. This last chain is in like new condition and gave readings between 2 and 6. I'm not sure why. The VDI reading was a little jumpy but strong. Probably because it was near the surface. All I can think is that the highly polished surface may have had something to do with the readings. The position of the chain when located may have been a factor also.

Do you find that you dig a lot of pull tabs and chopped up aluminum cans or have you found a way around them? I could side my house with the amount of aluminum I'm digging.

I dug two deep holes today. One 8", found a chunk of lead that had VDI of 40; and one over 12", found a ~10" iron ring that had a VDI of 62, that was at ground level. When I got down to within an inch of the ring the unit overloaded and I knew I'd been duped. Worked this site for nearly 3 hours and found one new penny.

Yesterday, I did find a 1948 dime at two inches behind a baseball field's batting cage.

del.

Yes I dig a lot of pull tabs and aluminum "can slaw" that the lawn mowers chew up. There is just no way that I know of to get around it. I figure that I dig up well over 200 pieces of junk, mostly aluminum, for every piece of good jewelry I find. In the last eight months, since I got my MXT, I have averaged about one gold and one silver piece of jewelry per week. I detect a lot, about 10 12 hours a week. I'm am fortunate to live in the Seattle area where there are scores of parks and sports fields to search within a 10 mile radius of my home. 90% of my finds are 1 to 3 inches in depth. I use the Bigfoot coil and cover a lot of ground with enough depth to find the goodies. One tip- and this may work for you as it has for me. If you do not have a pinpointer, get one. I have worn out the switch on two so far and worn down the probe tips. They are a must for fast recovery so that you can quickly recover a target and and move onto the next. I had no idea how much good jewelry was out there until I got into this hobby about 13 months ago. The thing is if you have access to parks and play fields in your area and you dig mostly those targets below VDI reading 35 to 10 You will find Gold. I now have 28 gold rings, 30 silver ones and several gold and silver chains to prove it. I am not bragging but I an astonished at times when I think about all the jewelry I have found in such a short time, albeit I put in an extraordinary amount of time into this hobby.

Thanks Mike. I'm doing more dig-it-all hunting than I've done in my few months of practice last year. My son got me started on that since he was killing me on good finds with that method in the past few weeks.

I've always passed up the jumpies as trash and have never found a chain. Just wondering... Thanks for the info.
