Going to Myrtle Beach aug13-16...am i SOL?

Hi,
I'm going to north carolina on vacation for a week and 4 days of that to North Myrtle Beach...all i have is a Garrett Ace 250...am i scr*wed or what? i've heard it wont work in the salty sand, even dry sand...here in Arizona it doesn't work on the heavy mineralized hotrock ground either....(it's very good in parks with sand or grass)

Problem is i only go to the beach once a year so buying an expensive salt water detector is out...i just want something to work on the dry sand at this point...I am excited about detecting on a beach finally and would be very very disappointed if i can't do ANYTHING while at the beach.

and i hope i can search for relics in NC without hot rocks in the ground I hope...

this is a once a year chance for some great detecting...any ideas about the beach? (i was even looking on ebay for a lower priced water detector but their aren't any...if i could use it at the beach and at home in Arizona i would buy another, better detector)

I use the Ace 250 here in FL on the dry sand it it does an EXCELLENT job. It is super sensitive to small gold and will nail coins with great accuracy in the dry sand. If your sand is wet underneath then you will need to turn the sensitivity down to where it stops falsing. It will not work in the wet sand, but in dry sand it's awesome.

Try to take a drive down to the beach during the heat of the day and see where the people are gathered then go back late in the afternoon and first thing in the morning and hunt it. I hunt in all metal and sensitivity wide open, if it chatters lower the sensitivity until it smooths out. With wet sand under the dry sometimes I am down to 1 or 2 bars on the sensitivity.

Hope this helps,

thanks Chuck...that gives me a little hope....what should i make sure i have with me before driving to the beach once i arrive in NC?

i have a scooper but it is pretty large and would take up too much room in my suitcase...lol....should i just use my moms spade or digger if she has one and buy something to sift with after i get there?

do you use a sifter and a digger in dry sand?

Should I definitely carry on my detector versus checked luggage?

thanks for any advice......

Let me know how you make out on your Myrtle Beach detecting.I'll be at Myrtle Beach Sept 10-15 with my Ace 250.Let me know your experiences in the dry and wet sand(especially let me know if you can work it successfully in wet sand.I have a long handle water scoop and a heavy Gator digger I'll be bringing. Thanks, Norm Marsh

will do Norm....i don't hold out much hope with my experiences lately with hot rocks all over northern arizona...but it does work in park sand so just maybe....

i think it will work good in dry beach sand...if wet underneath then like someone said, it may go nutty on me...they turn their sensitivity down to like 2 or 3 to get it to work but seems to me you would miss most everything then....might as well walk along with a scoop and just dig up sand at random...lol

anyway, i will let you know for sure and also post any thing i find....my first beach trip detecting...how aboutyou?

Think i will need a digger or will the scooper do solo?

i am staying on the beach in North Myrtle.....

Later gator.......

We are staying in North Myrtle beach as well.I'd bring a short knee high sand scoop and a garden trowel digger as well. This will be my first salt water beach hunt with the Ace 250.Don't forget the sunscreen or you'll fry.Norm
