I also just purchased an E-Trac a few weeks ago. I don't think you really need to rush out a buy anything extra for a start. The box contains a set of Koss UR30 headphones which work just fine, you get two battery packs, the sealed NiMh one with the charger and the 8AA cell pack, for which I would get some rechargeable batteries. Either battery pack will keep you detecting all day long without any problems. I was also thinking about an extra coil, but didn't get one, decided it was best to learn the new machine and see just how good it's stock coil was before rushing out to buy something else.

I think after you have used the E-Trac a few times you will be in a better position to decide whether you need to purchase any extras based on the type of detecting you do. Chances are you will be happy with what you get out of the box.

I am also ordering an E-Trac & it should arrive in a few days, just sold me SE. Here is what I have learned & what I would have with me when I go hunting.

1. You cant lose buy buying an additional battery pack, you may find a great spot & if your battery gets down to 1-2 bars, you got about an hour left of detecting. I always have a spare as well as a set of recharge ables just in case.

2.When I bought my SE 18 months ago, I found out quickly that I needed a "real" digger that can do the job right, so you should look at a Predator or similar digger to make it easier to cut a plug in the ground, not Mom's shovel in the garden shed. You will be amazed how much easier digging with a quality shovel can be. I don't have any first hand use on the Minelab digger you get with most E-Trac packages, but I assume the after market digging tools are superior

3. I also recommend a pin pointer. It is much easier to recheck your hole with a little wand versus having to stand up & re-swing the coil to see if your object has been scooped out or is in your pile of dirt. I ordered the Sunray probe due to the fact that it connects right to your detector & doesn't need an external battery, there is a switch with diverts power to it. It will save you alot of time in the field, otherwise you would need to grab handfuls of dirt & wave it over the coil until you found your item which can be tedious.

4. A good pair of leather gloves from Home Depot or other hardware store. You will surely be getting a blister or two on your hands with all the digging so this will minimize that, plus with all the dirt you will be handling, it is easier if you are grabbing dirt out of a hole with a glove than your bare hands, especially if there are sharp objects down their.

5. A towel or rubber mat. When you are digging a target, & you start scooping out the dirt, you don't want to just scoop it out all over the place especially if you are in someones yard or in a park. Putting the dirt on this, makes it easier to find a coin as well as "all" the dirt goes back in the hole, so you can leave a place with virtually no signs that you have been their.

I totally agree with what Don said. The only thing I did differently is chose gloves that have the palm and fingers parts made out of rubber. That keep my hands warmer because they stay dry. I can just wipe the mud/dirt off by rubbing them across the wet grass/weeds that are around me. I got some with really thin rubber and I can feel a coin in a slot I made for a shallow recovery. I bought some thicker ones for the winter as they kept me a little warmer. Kind of like a winter jacket and a Spring jacket...for my hands...Jim

A Sunray X-1 Inline Probe. There is nothing better to help you recover those deep targets you will be digging. HH...Jesse.

I am with Jesse on this. It would be hard for me to use a different kind after using the Sunray for a while. You dont have to have it but it sure has made life a lot easier for me since I bought it and if you are patient, you can find one here on Find's at a decent price.
