going to beach this summer-what MXT coil to use.

Ok a newbie to Whites ---question. I will hopefully go the the Georgia coast this summer. its kinda muddy coast area. not pretty white quartz like the Gulf of Mexico. some blackish sand in it. i have never been able to beach hunt in the wet sand with a standard land unit. i now have the mxt with a salt mode Hooorah! and the 950 and the 6x10 coil. i do not know the salt content of this area, which i was told could make a difference.

anyone live in Georgia/South Carolina/ Daytona area FLorida that can reccommend anything to help me with this? i am very willing to listen, try and learn. i dont get to go but once every few years and then if its the state park- thats a BIG go to jail no-no. this trip another does have a "legal beach" nearby and would like to actually find something. thanks carey.

do i need to buy another coil just for the beach?

I have never had the opportunity to hunt a beach but for dunes I would think the 12" and run it hot for depth don't think you need to worry about salt there. The same may work well in clean sandy beach areas but muddy type sand probably go the 6X10 or 950. There has to be some beach hunters here that can help out or do a search on beach hunting here on Findmall. I am sure there are a multitude of posts on the subject. People have made incredible finds along a beach and the storms replenish the beach. Getting green with envy.

i had a buddy said any will do in the salt mode, just slow down speed. speaking of "green" with envy--going to the beach costs plenty of the green, believe me! need to find some yellow metal to pay for it! will be in rental house with inlaws and sister in laws-- good grief--yea i am going to the next island over and hunt! lol!

Rental house with in-laws. Envy retracted.

Jekyll island is beautiful, but no Md'ing allowed. period. Federal trouble and they dont give stuff back either. have to go to St Simons next door.

Personally, I would use the 950 coil if I didn't use my BigFoot first. HH and good luck, Nancy

how is the d2 different from the sef and the 6x10? too heavy a coil takes its toll on my elbow. the mxt feels fine the way it is built. i tried a minelab with a wot once-- NO THANKS! THE ORTHO BILL WAS GREATER THAN THE FINDS.

i do like the 950 and getting the hang of pinpointing with the 6x10 the learning curve on an MXT is not as bad as expected, and as i said before its a forgiving machine.

OK, you said you have the 6x10 and the 950 and wanted to know which to use. I don't know how anyone could read D2 or 12" coil into that. The two you have will both work pretty well on the dry saltwater sand with the 950 getting a little more depth and the 6x10 getting a little more coverage. It's really a toss up between the two and I'd go with the coil you're most comfortable with. (I used to live in Georgia so I'm speaking from experience). The MXT, even with the Salt mode is not a great performer on the wet saltwater sand. You'll have to reduce the gain until the detector runs smooth. Make sure you ground balance in both the wet and the dry and lock the tracking after doing the GB. Good Luck!

I live on the ocean smith river,ca. California, oregon boardor ,and was there today with the 6x 10 found 13 cents a button, a zipper , coater pin, oh, an American flag pin. My settings was c/j , gain 9/10 dual 3 and on salt . Dry sand. Wet sand nothing but pain. I don't have the 2d but I have good results at the river, creeks, ocean, school yard, and parks. I hope that was helpful for whoever.

yea i kinda figured the gain might have to go down. a friend from forums in maine says his works fine, but sand is different too. i guess i will find out. cant justify another unit now-especially salt dedicated unit. i kno a tracker IV at &89 bucks will work-- yep -- believe it or not--not deep but will work. i believe the MXT turned down should do. more cols will come later too.

does a DD have an advantage over Concentric in salt?

Yes, in the since that the concentric coil doesn't work in salt for me ,and I have a 5.3 and have gotten no where with it on the beach it act's like a turkey with it's head cut off. But, the 5.3 works real good on land and trash area. I think every body should have a white's dd coil in their collection, and not some band from god knows where. I also have a 10x12 sef and as far as the beach it's like the 5.3 except it is bigger and go's deeper. The 12" 300 that I have is great for big field's and going down as much as 12" or maybe more depending on the ground. But, the beach again I had no luck and I've been up and down on them controls for me the turkey ran wild. Oh, the dunes again the whites dd coils, and salt switch for all coils no way been there done that. Well that's me happy hunting everybody.

mouseman Sounds like wisdom born of experience. Thanks for the input. You said "I think every body should have a White's dd coil in their collection" am I to understand that that would be your recommendation? I have the 6X10 that I have found a new love for and a 12X10 SEF arriving tomorrow of the two which would be your pick? I really want the best coils for my area. A small (nugget shooting) Medium (prospecting and general hunting) Large (Ghost towns, Fields) I have the 5.3 and 8X6 SEF to test for the small. I will have both the 6X10 DD and 12X10 SEF for testing by tomorrow for the Medium. I am thinking the 13" Ultimate for a Large coil.

i guess i will see when it happens in August- the 950 and the DD 6x10. i am getting used to the DD pinpointing, doing the "SLIDE" I have done the Tesoro "SHAKE" for 13 yrs and old habits hard to break.

on several forums knowledgible guys and gals have said the alkalinity of certain salt beaches and the type sand are a factor. quartz verus the black mucky stuff. will see what happens. will drag along buds old backup excal to make sure-- it will do it!

Yes, that would be my Recommendation, and people might disagree but that's my pick, and I'm sticking with it. The 6x10 dd is a collectible piece of coil to have in my book. I'm learning like everybody else. the 10x12 or the smaller one is worth the try. But, like i said before I had no luck on the beach and it operated bad. But, for Finding stuff no matter what coil you use the trigger in vdi works great when searching as long as you are watching the screen like a gps in a car getting around in the city ,and you don't have to have bars all the way across to fine things, I've experience . But, you do need to have half or full bars to fine stuff. This metal detector will do wonders if you use it right. I'm learning to. Good luck people
