might as well. i havent tried it yet and im bored with the parks and schools. there are a ton of spots just not sure what i am doing yet. cant be that much different then rag detecting right? any tips would help. i think i will go hit some of the far back streams first see what i can find. wish me luck. i will post pics if i get anything.

i posted rag detecting. you are probably wondering what this is. i have no idea i meant to type reg detecting....just another dork moment on my behalf...:)

Funny I should see this post right now...lol.
I didn't take my metal detector, but after reading up on gold hunting here, I decided to add a couple of (previously unused) gold pans to my fishing arsenal yesterday. Going out yesterday morning I panned out two handfuls of riverbottom while attempting to outwit the local Rainbow Trout. Each handful yeilded a small (very small) piece of gold - so not only will I be doing more of this, but I'll be hauling along the MXT in the future (there are many promising looking dry washes close by).

I have the first 3 days of June off and will be checking out the "feeder streams" that run into the river I live on. If I can consistently find these little chunks of gold, I'll no doubt use the metal detector to find spots to settle in and maybe do some panning and sluicing with a home made "poopchute".

Best of luck to ya... I too will post pics if there's anything worth posting :)...

I do a lot of gold hunting here in AZ but most of what I find isn't with a detector. I drywash it out of the washes.

It all depends on if you live in a gold-producing area, how large the typical gold pieces are, etc. Around here most serious gold hunters use a Gold Bug II or Lobo SuperTraq. I've considered using my MXT but haven't done so yet. Some use the very expensive Minelab GP and GS series machines. No detector is going to find gold dust, so hopefully you are in an area that has a few respectable nuggets.

Anyway, it's always nice to get out into the hills and look around. I've found some really interesting-looking areas to detect while out poking around for a tiny piece of gold or two. It makes for some nice exploring.

Good luck!!

i live near coloma where sutter found the first nugget that started the gold rush. the history says that even though during the gold rush an amount totalling over 4 billion dollars in todays standerds was recovered, there is still over 80 percent of the gold left to be found. look up the history of highway 49. its really interesting.
