Going out This Saturday - Here's one from before

Going out on my usual Saturday hunt. I like to look over my old finds to encourage my next hunt. This 2 real was found in 2005. It has a good story. I was detecting a hunted out site and was not finding anything (not even shotgun shells!). I always swing as wide as I can, lifting my coil over rocks and down trees. I passed it over a rock and as it signaled strongly, I could see the coin half buried. It looked like it slid from the hillside onto a flat rock. I could instantly recognize it as a clad Washington quarter some hunter probably lost recently. It was not Washington on the front. I was shocked!! I'm sure it was only missed because it was on, not near the rock. Needless to say, I scan all rocks now. (never found another rock find yet.) HH I'll let you know what turns up on Saturday.

That sure is a beautiful coin. Just goes to show, you never know where or how deep the next find will come from.

thats a nice 2 reale there coinnut. theyre not found very often anymore. ive had good luck in the past detecting around pavers or stepping stones in yards, both under them and between them. sometimes the machine gets a little wacky around the natural stone pavers, but a good strong signal will usually go thru. good job, and hh,

Hi, That one is Spanish. Used here during the rev / post rev era. It was as common as the British Half Cents and Cents were. We also had some of our states minting our own coins about that time.

I know rocks can play havoc with the machines. My DFX doesn't have a great program for those trap rock (Basalt) areas yet. It's all trial and error.

I have the same problem with rocks here and there does not seem to be a way to descriminate them out, without also eliminating other things.
Read up on meteroites but there are many different kinds of those, too many to remember and decide if the rocks my detector finds, are true meteroites.

That is awsome. There's nothing like that around here.

When those were being used for trade, only beads, horses

or things like steel blades would have been worth much around

here.

HH,

This was on the Tesoro forum so Monte only named the Tesoroes that would accomplished this task. There are many other brands that offer these abilities. I am using this example because it gives circomstances where hot rocks can be seen through.

[quote Monte]
So, I keep my 'Homestead Rock' with me so I can use it in quick evaluations of different detectors. I can lay a zinc cent on the ground, directly under this rock, and if I sweep over it with a model that really offers true full target acceptance in the Disc. mode (true ED-180), it will ignore the 'ground signal' (of the rock) and pass along the target response. Hi Tabdog, I can usually get a solid 4-5" in those trap rock areas. I think my DFX would pass "the under the rock test." I would rather get 8" I'm always looking for that tweaking of the machine, so I can get the things that are missed.:)

Your right Coinnut,

The DFX and several models of Whites, old and new, have the ability to accept so called hot rocks.

There is a post where Monte names off several MDs that have that capability. I could
not find it. I can't remember what the thread was about, or the approximate date.

I read a real good Monte post about it on the Whites MDing forum. I can't find it either.

The discriminator must be able to accept a wider range of the spectrum of conductive materials in order to accept tough rocks. Thus being able to see through them. If I understand it correctly. If it can't accept it, it can't see through it.

Just because a metal detector can not pass this test, does not mean it is not an excellent MD. It is just a strong point. Different MDs have different strong points and weak points. Some suit one person, but not another. If you want to cherry pick, you do not need full acceptance in a discreminator.

Case in point is the Silver uMax. Great for park cherry picking. My favorite Silver is the Silver Sabre uMax, which I have one of.

What suites us is something we each have to discover for ourselves.

Happy is the MD'er with the right MD.

HH,

Always wondered about those Tesoros. Heard good things about them. Wondered how they would do in areas I hit hard with my Whites. Unless I hit the lottery, though or somebody lives near bye with one, I'll never know. You are right. We are all better off with our respected brands. A Tesoro in my hands would not do the brand justice. Took me years to master :)rofl:) my Whites. Bet you're pretty dangerous with yours!!
