Going North in October (MA)......

Taking the wife and daughter to Salem in mid October. Already told her I plan to get in some detecting. Was thinking about checking out Revere Beach. Was wondering if anyone had any comments on this location or any others in that area that might be worth trying. Also are permits required for parking or hunting? Thanks!

I've only been to Revere a couple times - I personally didn't like it too much as it just seemed pretty dirty - not one of the nicer beaches I've been to, but I did find a gold ring and I know of others that have found nice things there.

I primarily stick to Hampton(NH), Salisbury(MA), and a couple smaller beaches N of there up to about York Beach in Maine.

No detecting permits needed on any beaches in MA, NH or ME that I've ever hunted. Haven't had to get a parking permit either - lots of meter parking (not cheap) if you go during the day - although I wonder if you still have to pay in October (after typical swimming season) - maybe others can comments on that.

There are loads of beaches all along the coast (check out Mapquest or GoogleEarth and just work your way up the shoreline and you'll see what I mean).

The hunting in October probably won't be as good since regulars will have had a month or more to "scour the beaches" after the normal swimming time of year, but there's still stuff to be found. Try to check tide times if you can and go when it's the lowest if possible.

If you're REALLY lucky, we'll get a tremendous storm while you're here and some of the good old stuff will surface.

I'll let others who hunt down that way give you more info.

Thanks for the info Cubfan... I actually found Revere on google earth, and had a bit of concern as to whether it was a nice beach or not. I also figured the pickings might be slim, but there is only so much time I can spend with the witches. Salisbury looks nice, although the drive is a bit further. Maybe I'll just have to hit the dirt instead :)

I just don't get down that way enough to know what's good and what's not. I can't remember exactly what time of year I went to Revere those 2 times, but I know it was "offseason" so maybe they keep the beach cleaned up a bit more during the summer - not sure.

It's also not exactly in the nicest area of Boston either - I felt fine going there after sunrise for a few hours, but I don't think I'd go there by myself in the dark with a headlamp.

I think there's supposed to be some nice beach areas between Boston and the Cape too that might be easier for you to get to.

Like I said - hopefully some of the regulars here will give you more tips - good luck though, and keep your fingers crossed for a good storm while you're here :)

[size=medium]I've never detected there myself, but here are a couple of things for you. First is a picture of the beach that you can see by clicking this link http://www.city-data.com/picfilesv/picv567.php

Revere beach is the oldest established beach in the United States. It was just given the title of "National Historic Landmark". That alone may put a crimp in your style trying to detect there. Since that designation I don't know if the rules have changed regarding detecting on the beach or not.

For more details click the link below and it may answer more questions for you. Good luck.
