I read a lot on here and another forum and keep coming across these post about when someone gets a Detector and say it comes with a 8 inch coil stock and they want to get a 5.75 coil per say I see where someone says that is a great coil but you WILL HAVE TO SEND it in to be tuned or retuned to that control head !!!! I have yet to have to have done this, with the acception of one coil and that was on a Whites where the coil had some how attained a bad wire joint inside the coil so they gave me another coil . Thanks ahead for any reponses

I have never had to send a Tesoro in to have a "non stock" coil retuned. I look at it like say you buy a sports car and it will go 200 miles per hour when purchased at a dealer, you can take that car to specialty garage and have the motor worked on by a pro and have it do 220 miles per hour. Some like to get every little bit out of their stuff. At least that's my thinking . Also a detector with a non adjustable ground balance might benefit from matching/tuning the coil to the detector.

You're right Steve. Since Tesoro has such good customer service and offer doing re-tuning for free for life, it's probably over done a bit.

Re-tuning coils is not unique to Tesoro. You just don't hear much about it with the other manufacturers since they charge to do it when the warranty expires.

I like having a model with adjustable ground balance, then you can use any coil that is designed for that model. An out of specification coil might need to be sent in, but very rare occurrence from my experience.

Kinda thought so another reason I am getting the Tejon also They say the dual disc is awesome as well

Even though I don't have one, the Tejon's dual discrimination seems like a good alternative to displays IMHO. With a quick switch between two different acceptance ranges, I'm sure with practice that folks can
make pretty accurate estimates of the likelyhood of trash versus goodie. I've become fairly good at that by just thumbing one discrimination detectors.

Thanks Bill Kinda interested in giving it a try in a couple weeks picking it up after the 15th of this month Breaking down and trading a Shadow X2 for it I mainly use the X2 for coin hunting so will have to get a compadre now LOL

I think that you will be surprised Barry how well the Tejon for coin hunting and jewelry hunting. I call it Tesoro's do everything detector, I will never forget the last hunt with the Tejon I had I got back to back rings. And them dual discrminators are alot of fun trying different settings with., a real fun detector to use.

The only detectors I have heard of needing retuning when you change coils is on the models with a fixed ground balance.

Manual ground balance units don't need retuning so far as I know.

unless you leave the detector and coil in the car.
the heat can cause the epoxy in your coil to shift and the coil will need to be opened and retuned.

I just had a detector returned from Tesoro with a new coil as the old coil had shifted somehow out of tune and couldn't be repaired. Vaquero with manual ground balance. Until recently I'd always thought that the ground balance issue was the only concern, but not so. That said, I use different coils on several preset Tesoros with no problems. Some years back, I talked to the factory about that and they told me that it isn't always crucial to have the presets retuned, BUT if one were going to use a particular non-standard sized coil a lot on the detector it may be worth having it done to get the best performance possible. IMHO it's worth trying before sending.

Also My understanding is that larger coils are more likely to need to be retuned , not smaller coils.

I Agree I think {coil tuning} is no more the setting Ground Balance. Jay

I have the Golden umax, which is fixed GB,and i have five different coils i put on the Golden with no noticeable lose of performance. What happens when you want to put the stock coil back on?Hog wash!I am leaving mine right were it is.And to be totally correct, you would have to send the coil, control box and a small box of your soil to have it tuned right. It is a waist of time to do this. :-C
