Going Blind (diabetes), any tips to enhance screen visibility?

Hello,
I am literally loosing my eyesight and have much difficulty seeing the explorer II screen during the daytime. At night, I can still make out a great deal, but not at arm

How about making a type of blind. Like horse blinders. But mount them on the Ex so they are about a foot long. Like the machine you look into to test for a drivers liscense. As you put you face up to it all light would be blocked out. And you would look into a tunnel about a foot long? Might work. ?

And , Go check out Kmart or Walmart or Ebay for the gameboy lighted screen enhancers. It was a lighted/ slight magnification screen that went over the top of a gameboy screen to make it bigger and lighted.

Turn down your contrast to 5, I think if you have it turned up all the way it will saturate. Also, I cut a piece of plastic from a folder, the kind that holds notebook paper, it's really thin and adds no weight, it's gray in color and mounted it in between velcro taped to the top of the control box so it can slide so that it can be adjusted to block out the sunlight. This has really worked for me, give it a try.HH

Thanks Everyone! Lots of things to try; it is all appreciated.
I have been thinking about buying different color theater gels (the type that go over the high powered lights in a theater) and making a type of blinders, visor, or even a tunnel to pear down. I

How about modifying your machine so the contro
box is chest mounted. Would have the same effect as your video screen/camera idea but be lighter in two spects. No video kit/batteries to carry and less detector weight.

I know nothing about this mod but have seen plenty of pics showing it done on this and other forums.

Hip mount (shoulder or chest mount) would be great, but I've only seen kits for the S & XS models. I think the Explorer II makes it more difficult, and I have to admit, It would be a little intimidating ripping the control panel off such an expensive piece of equipment. When my eyesight was good, I would have jumped right in with soldering iron in hand.
There would have to be some type of kit so that the upper shaft could mount to the battery housing. I

Should not be that difficult....surely?

There is pics of a mod on this site in the Mods forum, not the II but an XS, but they are not that different again.....are they?

I know that kellyco has hip mount kits for the S & XS.

I believe that one of the ways Minelab fixed the crack in the housing on earlier models is to superglue it. This makes it more difficult to remove. Check out detectorgear.com in the mods forum. I never owned an Exp XS (only a musketeer XS), so I'll have to do some research to see what the differences are, and if the hip mount kit would work.

...but I never did get around to trying it so I can't say for sure whether it would work for sure with an Exp II. Made by Birch Engineering and bought from David at Dixie MD in Madison TN. You might check with David, he still sells Birch's CW bullet gauge.

to get a pair or two of plain 1.5X or 2.0X magnifying glasses. They sell them in most of the department stores.

It is a good idea, but I tried the reading glasses and specialized computer glasses too, but neither worked.
The lenses in my eyes are good, but the retinas behind the eyes are damaged. This makes glasses alone of little help. My remaining vision is hard to describe. It is almost like watching a movie at the theater with sunlight shining in, then fill the room with fog, and put some floating spider webs over the projector lens.

you would like to hear but you might think about trading in your Explorer on one of the new Xterra's. They have a really easy to read display with large numbers and excellent contrast that is much much better than the Explorer's Screen. Even in bright Sunlight it's very easy to read. On the downside there is no backlight so you can't see it at all during the night! But if you hunt mostly during the daylight hours at least there is a Minelab alternative to the Explorer. Hopefully they will improve the screen visibility on the next version of the Explorer.
