Here are some links to tests and hunts I have done with small coils.

I realize you and I hunt completely different types of sites...as I hunt trashy parks....fairgrounds...schools...etc...while you do most of your hunting at old homesites...but trust me...a small coil WILL definitely pick some more goodies out of the trashy ground that the stock sized coils will not hit.

I am in the process of field testing the Excelerator 4.5 x 7 coil...so I can't give any useful info on it yet....need a couple more hunts with it.

I did include the Sunray X-8 and 6x8 SEF coil links...but I don't consider them small coils. I consider them as midsized coils.

Also I appreciate you taking the time to pm me about cleaning the mystery injun'. Thank you Terry.

great info Bryce, and THANK YOU for listening to my advice by not ruining your 1870's indian with peroxide! I was nervous you would take others advice and turn your coin an ugly dark brown......yuck!

My only concern about small coils is just this Bryce, the MAJORITY of the houses I hunt is a one trip deal, rarely do I get the chance to go back because I am just knocking doors. I don't feel like pushing my luck by saying "Mr Home Owner, I found some good items would you mind if I came back yet another time to hunt again?"

I feel gracious enough that they let me hunt once and I just don't like to ask for return visits out of respect for them. So I try to get as much as possible during my 4-5 hours I am there. So with a small coil I might be able to sneak some goodies out of the heavy trash, but will I be shooting myself in the foot, because my time can be better spent by covering more area since it is a one time deal?

Granted I do have some sites, like my 1850's fairground where I KNOW a small coil will come in handy, so I will probably still get one. I am searching for a used one, just don't have $200 extra bucks right now for a new coil and lower shaft!
So if you see one for sale used or know of anyone who wants to sell one let me know! I am considering the 8" minelab or the 6 x 8 butterfly
