GMT in the hands of an old timer!

B.T

New member
Took an old mate out yesterday, 78 years young, with his new GMT. By the end of the day, him 5 bits, me zilch. He even got one of them just ten feet away from my car, just to rub it in. He,s been detecting since the first machines hit the goldfields over here. Full of great stories and a pleasure to detect with. Good on him.

Great day BT. Hope you were taking notes.Your turn next time. Good luck.

:usmc: What coil did the old mate have on his GMT?

He was using the standard supplied 10" elliptical coil. He found some great nuggets in the early days of detectors when 5 ounce slugs were common. His best was a 58 ouncer. He has that uncanny ability to find a bit no matter where he is. Wish I could replicate that!

:usmc: Isn't that something, after all those years, he must still have the ears for them little yellow rascals. You need to get a couple lawn chairs under the shade tree and some frosty beers  to do some question and answer with him. He has got to be a walking library on this nugget shooting stuff. From my own experience, the new does not go ahead without the old and those old machines did and still do find gold. The biggest difference between back when and now is the easiest and biggest gold has pretty much been picked up. What it would have been like to have today's machines and go back to the late 50's and early 60's.

That smile on his face pretty much gives his opinion of the new GMT and there is no substitute for the years of experience he has under his belt. Tell the old mate congratulations for me........

He's a great old guy and I have been good friends with him for about 20 years. The type of person who would always back you up no matter what, old school.
Yeah we have had some good times around the campfire over the years. Once about 15 years ago I got my cars back end stuck in an old diggers water runoff ditch. Couldn't budge it. Two other guys tried to push me out. Old Alex comes over "ah give us a look, get in and ill push" him alone gets behind and hands under the bumper lifts and pushes with his back into it. Dead set, he had me out in no time! Tough old critter. When he started they were using machines that we would consider toys but the gold they got! Once he was detecting with a friend and they were every few minutes getting 1/4 oz to ounce bits and as they did they'd throw them over to each other to look at. Alex steps over a log and wham, monster signal and looking up at him a 58 ounce slug, he picks it up without a word and then says to his mate "get a load of this one" and chucks it over to him. His mates jaw drops and so did the nugget. Imagine it being that easy!

Hey, That's a great stand of Gum trees in the background.
I spent two years down there from 84 to 86. Sometimes I dream of
going back but that's just not in the cards right now.
Good hunting and hope you guys find more.

Sometimes its the nut behind the wheel type analogy...Older detectors usually were heavier without all the bells and whistles and many oldtimers are still doing well with old technology as they use their ears and instincts...

i have a place that is loaded with quartz everywhere.Mica is also everywhere and black sand in the washes but i have found no real gold.I also use the gmt.Is it still a crapshoot whether there is gold there or not?
