GMT Goldmaster E-Series

Hello,

For those who have used the White's GMT Goldmaster E-Series, do you beleive it can be used as an all around detector (for coins, jewellry, relics, etc.) as well as a gold finding unit. Does it have good depth ?

I have used the GMT for all detecting. It operates at a higher freqency and tends to go to the gold a little better. It has a better ground balance set up which is verfy handy--if you need it. Yes, it will work just fine...IMHO

Hummmmm. That surprises me. I thought the GMT was intended strickly as a gold machine.

Well, I have never used the GMT. I have read the reviews on the machine and the one at Lost Treasure. I never saw anything in those reviews about useing it as an all purpose machine like the MXT. You got my curosity up now. I'll have to call Whites or e-mail Jimmy Serria and see what he's got to say.

I would agree. I don't know why anyone would want to use the GMT for anything other than what it was intended.
I had thought about getting the GMT (I already have the MXT) for the prospecting mode, but now that I have researched the
X-70 I will probably don the line get that instead.

Since you already have a MXT, why would you need or want an X70. If you want the best VLF nugget detector go with the GMT.

I recently contacted White's on the very subject of using the GMT for relic hunting as well as gold hunting. I equally enjoy both pursuits and have more than one detector. The info I retrieved amounted to the following:
GMT: it's ground balancing capabilities can be a real plus in highly mineralized gold and relic areas
GMT: better at finding fine placer and small gold than the MXT
GMT: should be equally sensitive and deep seeking for other metal objects but you will dig PLENTY since it lacks discrimination functions other than gold or iron
MXT: good for gold but likes small pickers not fines
MXT: Very good at targeting relics and eliminating unwanted metals as well as identification

Sooooo if you cannot afford both than the MXT is more diverse and works in both areas but will miss some of the finer gold you might pursue

Hi,

Can the GMT be used as an all around detector? Yes, but by very few people. In general that would not be a good idea. Yes, I own one.

Does it have good depth? Absolutely. As good or better than any high frequency unit I've used on gold range targets. For silver, other units do better.

I'd suggest the MXT as a better alternative given your question.

For what its worth I have used and owned a GMT over here in Oz with great success in the past. It was a great little machine on gold and I did find some old coins with it on the goldfields. Yes it is very very sensitive to small iron fragments that can be found anyewhere but you can to a degree get rid of the small ones that can pose a problem if you were hunting for coins. Lower the sensitivity and raise the coil far enough off the ground to take the small bits out of the detection zone. A bit of trial and error which shouldnt take long to figure out on the spot you are hunting should see you right. You will still retain enough ooompf to get the large targets like your coins.
That said though it is a purpose built gold getter and that is where it excells. But could be used for other purposes.
