Ghost town secrets

So last weekend my friend and I went up to an old mining ghost town to do some detecting. I expected to recover a fair amount of trash as usual but to my surprise....... THAT'S ALL I FOUND! I was using my X-70 and toggled back and fourth between all metal and some discrimination setting that I have set. What no one tells you on these posts is that the old mining ghost towns have TONS of tin! It's also not mentioned that unlike you and I they did not have a "garbage man" or many women around to tell them how to live. So what happened to all the canned food that they lived off of? They threw it out in the yard! Tin, tin and more tin! whats that you say? it's non-ferrous? Yup. Lots O diggin. helped the environment though.... I suppose. Anyone out there have an idea how to get around diggin all this? I mean, I could notch it out but then I'll miss the good stuff ..... right?

When I hunt around old settlements, I hunt in the Coin/Treasure mode until I get a suspect target, then I switch to the Prospecting mode to get a general idea as to the size and shape of the target. I can still get fooled by some deep old can lids. But I can usually determine if a target is "bigger than a coin" by using the Prospect mode on the X-70. JMHO HH Randy

yeah I'll have to try that. thanks for the advice!

Or try notching or blanking out all numbers below 38. Accepting all numbers 38 and above. Or try upping that method to 40 or 42 if you are still digging too much trash. You then will pick up Quarters and above in those mega trash infested places and will cut down on trash imensely. You will miss some goodies but speed up your hunting and pull less hair out.

You could get a 6" HF DD and block out -3 to -8 and +48 which would cut out the tin cans pretty much and makes hunting spaces between the trash much easier. Or just use all metal and ignore the deep burp sounds. The gold fields in Australia are littered with old tins axe heads broken shovels etc.. I didn't find any gold but dug lead shot, pellets and 22 slugs so you can find small stuff between the trash with some practice. When I got tired of the noise I went to coin mode as Digger above suggested till my ears recovered. I am convinced the 6" HF DD is THE coil for Heavy Trash and Mineralization.

All great suggestions! thanx a bunch.
