Ghost targets??? - M6

Still very new to this sport and my last few times out I have gotten solid, repeatable signals in the 70 to 84 range.
After pinpointing and getting depth readings at 3 to 4" I dig and cannot locate a target. Sometimes I dig 7 or 8'' w/ nothing. Other times I'll end up finding a can 7" down when it reads 3. What am I doing wrong???

Nothing wrong.. Large deep objects throw the vdi and depth off.. If you dig twice the depth reading and no target then it is likely a trash or large metal object.. Dig solid tones that read the same both ways and jumping vdi usually are trash..

Cosmic is right on as it took me awhile to figure this out.I have dug crushed cans copper chunks and water and gas shutoff valves that Id like in that range. You can double check yourself with a probe or lift your coil off the ground to see if you get a good hit 1 to 2 feet off the ground . These things have helped me some but always remember when in doubt dig it because you never know. Good luck and HH BOB

Remember the detector depth readings are based on coin sized objects. Objects smaller than a coin read deeper than they are, and larger objects read more shallow than the are. One help is to raise your coil, large deep objects still read and coin size objects disappear. You can also try sizing the object in pinpoint mode. Rob

Now HERE is where I would ike to see Whites come up
with something like Garretts 1350 or 1500 that shows the Size
of the target.

I have had happen to me what you discribe, with my MXT and ACe 250, many times.
Sometimes I can tell if its a big target. The thing is, DIG IT ANYWAY
because you might be surprised!

Good luck.

Thanks for the great responses. My hunt time is usually limited because of family obligations and I am trying to recover targets quicker.
There is always one or two a hunt where I can't find squat in my hole. The other problem is when pinpointing, I may only get half the bars on my screen so I center my dig where the loudest response and most bars are and still nothing. Sometimes I will find a crushed can when I expand the edges of my holes but why would it not be able to pinpoint better?

try detuning and slowly bringing the coil over the target!..it narrows the transmitted signal!

For some reason it seems that flat cans, bottle caps and flat screw caps pinpoint off to the side. I,am not sure why but if dig and its not in the hole I use my bullseye pinpointer to help locate the target. It really cuts down on my recovery time. A good pinpinter is must !!!! GOOD LUCK HH BOB
