GG Headphone Install ????

New member
High Guys, I have a Excal 2 that needs new headphones, I'm trying to figure out if anyone knows where to get a kit to install GG Amphibian headphones? Thanks.

There is no kit. You just pull the end cap, remove the old wiring and put the new in. Use epoxy to seal it up. Solder the two pin connector on the wires and you’re in business.

It’s just as easy as it sounds. Cut the wires off the end cap and use a drill to open up the hole. Go small and work up to the inside diameter of the hole. Make the hole bigger on the inside of the end cap so you can get some epoxy in there. Reuse the strain relief. Make sure you clean it up while you have it off. Pay attention to how long the original wires are inside the pod so you have enough length. I like to make the solder connections first then pull them in close to the end cap and fill it with the epoxy. Making sure to keep them apart. Not very difficult to do. May be something on YouTube.

Do u have the GGA already? If not id consider the MAL phones.... much louder...better tones...and the come with an end cap.

Who makes the MAL phones Dew? A link maybe...

High Dew, No I haven't ordered the GG yet. To be honest I wouldn't know a good set from bad so I appreciate any thoughts on brand quality. Is there a site that I can Google to look at that set up?

Theres a few folks on youtube that show removal and replacement/alteration of the headphone and coil wiring. I strongly recommend watching them closely even if they aren't doing Exactly what you are doing. Theres a couple of little tricks on angle of removal and such that are good to know. OBN's are the ones I used as I worked on mine, but I watched a couple of other folks to learn all I could before I opened up my Excal.

i think youd change your mind about knowing a good set if you use a set of MALs or Joes phones. Joe may pop on here with an addy ... but goofle it... you should see minelabowners..... hes on there. As far as putting the on.... piece of cake.... 2 set screws..... unplug inside.... make sure you have the notch set right so the board slips in.... and back together. Id use a little RTV silicone around the cap and those screws..... just screw the screw in even with the pod... over screwing can crack the pod a bit.

I have several of these for anyone interested, a easy fix for anyone needing head phones just purchase a set of Gray Ghost Amphibians for the CTX/3030 and this endcap ..........You will be back out hunting less then 22 minutes. Or a set of Harold's or Mal's headphones for the CTX. I No longer make head phones and next year I'm thinking of only doing these CTX M12 endcaps for the excalibur. No more PP kits.

High Ranger, Joe supplied me a Pin Point kit witch includes a endcap that will also let me add GreyGhost headphones, excellent fit and finish. If your needing endcaps, I highly recommend Joe.

Yes excals only, I still have two endcaps left as pictured above. Shop is closed for now other then what is already made. Jan n Feb is the only months I do these.

And Thanks SJM!

Oldbeachnut who produces the end caps for the XCAL Lists three sets of headphones The amphibians for the ctx, MALs Surfphones and ralph in fl who sometimes lists them on the for sale area on this forum. I just received my 'amphibians and now need to install them.

Do you still have any of the ends with the ikelight fitting by chance?

Very Sorry, all is gone till next Jan n Feb. Next year I believe all I will have are the Excalibur Endcaps with M-12 8 pin CTX female fitting. Thanks for asking..OBN

Hey Joe, just wanted to give you an update on the Excal upgrade we did. Seems to be working pretty good. :wiggle:

Next year I need to figure out how to change out to a small coil so I can work in heavy surf, let me know what you would suggest for that.

Hay, Thanks Again, I'm loving the new PP kit and GG headphones. Really pumped new life into my old Excal.
