During the Civil War, the Confederate Army and the Union Army fought outside a small town called Gettysburg on July 1-3, 1863. The Battle of Gettysburg was largest battle in the Western hemisphere. Here, more men died than any other place in North America and they were Americans, North and South, all of them, proud Americans.

With Stonewall Jackson dead, and Grant heading for Vicksburg, the South needed a major victory to gain support from foreign powers and encourage the antiwar effort in the Union. General Lee had two choices,

It must have taken you hours to put this together! I sure hope that folks will take a few minutes and view this story. Thanks you for presenting a very enjoyable story of Gettysburg! Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

In Virgina, seeing where many of these events too place.

It makes it real, as does your post

When one visits there, it's not hard to see the ghosts of those patriots all who gave their lives for their cause.

what a super job and story, kinda sad and heartrending but uplifting too.
Thank you for that!

in mind that make me so very proud of Nathan for being halfway through his third year at Virginia Military Institute. He is being taught by the best, which came from generations of people like General Lee! The whole campus is incompassed with history reminder of all who gave of themselves for our America! How lucky are we that these people did and still do exist??? :) Thank you so much for this post!

The haunting notes from "TAPS" will awaken the shadows of our souls, if we will only listen! I can only imagine what Gettysburg smelled like on July 5th. Everytime, I open a post like this along with pictures I feel the excitement, the adrenalin flow, the commanding screams, and the drummers haunting a tat-a tat-a tat tat tat tat, fiercely played faster and faster.

5 Stars General, the music you so choose for this memorial even put moisture n my old eyes.

Day is done, gone the sun,
From the hills, from the lake,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.

Go to sleep, peaceful sleep,
May the soldier or sailor,
God keep.
On the land or the deep,
Safe in sleep.

Love, good night, Must thou go,
When the day, And the night
Need thee so?
All is well. Speedeth all
To their rest.

Fades the light; And afar
Goeth day, And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well; Day has gone,
Night is on.

Thanks and praise, For our days,
'Neath the sun, Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh.

General Ray put many hours into constructing and posting this story for the enjoyment of the members of this Forum. I might add that this is not the first time either, but this is definitely the best one that he has ever posted...it is a classic! Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

I don't know if a story of the year thing is really necessary though. Every story that has been posted on this forum has been special in some way or other. A window to a persons past and they are willing to share it with the rest of us. None are less or more to me...

I have favorites an others may have a different one. I never was much into competitions. I amid I am sure you and all the rest, just like to enjoy a good story and each one is a connection to the poster that they feel comfortable enough to share.

Wayne said it last year, after he spent time in BC with Mike and Alice and I. It was not like meeting for the first time, it was like a reunion. That is what these storeys do for me. It seems like I already know each and every poster, at some level. It is strange

enjoy my post and thoughts brings a smile to my face because I was able to bring you along with me, that is all I need, I agree with Royal, knowing you and others on this forum enjoyed this little part of me, my passion for the Blue and Gray excites me to put more of these post together and I will work on it.

I love all the stories on this great forum, there are great writers on this forum, I am not one of them but I found my nitch where I can fit in, write about my passion, the Civil War.

Thank you for allowing me to express my heart, I always said, I was born 144 years to late, I would have made a great General in 1861 and wish I could go back because thats where my heart is.

Great poem Butch, I saved it!

in the pink tutu!

As you said, Royal, I like to hear from everyone in their own special way. This was certainly wonderful and I admire the General for being able to do it.

And you are also right about meeting for the first time is like a reunion. You, Mikey and Alice made this girl a true believer of this. It was one of the best times of my life, and when you and Mikey picked me up, it started and never stopped! The love, the laughter, the pain and the genuine friendship anyone is lucky enough to fall into! :)
