Getting to understand my Explorer SE

I got my SE in Jan 08, but living in Connecticut I didn't really get out with it 'till March. I read the manual but I knew it would still be trial and error.
I did ok my first few months ( My time out is limited ) but after reading Andy Sabisch's book I feel I'm starting to understand a bit more.
Before the book, in addition many indians and a decent amount of silver including Barbers, I also found:

1 William 3rd 1/2 penny (1695-1701)
2 George 2nd 1/2 penny 1745 & ?
3 Connecticut coppers
1 counterstruck large cent
3 draped Large cents
2 coronet LC
2 classic LC
3 1/2 reales
1 flying eagle cent
1 three cent siver

After reading the book and trying some new settings ( thanks Bryce ) I went back to a spot that a friend and I had pounded
for the last year ( in addition to a few other stray people). In two hours I found a merc, 3 silver Rosies and two large cents (1825 & 1833).
On these settings the Explorer seemed to suck the silver out of the ground!
Opinions: should I stay with the stock coil or should I invest in a new Pro coil?

if you gained anything at all from my settings...I am glad to have helped...and you are more than welcome my friend. As for the coil question....yes...definately give either the pro coil...or the S.E.F 10 x 12 coil a shot. Those two coils are both a step up in my opinion... from the stock SE slimline coil. I prefer the 10 x 12 S.E.F. coil...but many people love the pro coil too. They are both great coils.
If you're finding some nice goodies right now with the slimline coil though...no need to hurry on trying another coil until you feel you need to.
Take care...and good luck on your next hunt.

I've been on findmall for only a short time and I've found your posts to be very interesting. The location I mentioned has produced quite a bit - at least
30 large coppers, a couple two centers, a couple LC tokens, but only a small amount of silver (SO FAR...), mercs, Rosies and Washingtons. Seems in an area that has produced so many coppers from 1700-1850's there should be some silver of the same period. The section I hit Sunday with the new settings has been hit a number of times by me with the Explorer and many times by my friend with his Whites. Seems a little change in settings proved out. I can't wait to get back and find more.
I started detecting in 1974 with a Compass ( no discriminator ) and did quite well. I learned to listen for the quieter, sloping signals. I then went to a Garret with a discriminator, then to a Whites. Then kids came along and detecting all but stopped for 15 years. After a divorce I picked up a Bounty Hunter Landstar and messed with that for 5-6 years because I didn't have much time ( don't laugh, I found a lot of coppers and silver including seated with the Bounty Hunter. Believe it or not I actually found a 1662 Oak Tree two pence with it - I almost fell over!!).
Again, thanks for the reply and the tips.

Bruce
