Getting some grief

Hi all, Im having real trouble with the way the explorer is assembled. I carry my Explorer miles in a rucksack on my back in the hunt for new areas. The peices of MD I have are the bottom shaft connected to the coil, the centre leg, and the control box. Feeding the flexi cable through the centre leg and holding it in place while connecting to the control box is difficult. Getting the cable through the centre leg is the worst, I tied a shoelace to pull it through but it stopped the shaft from seating properly in the control box. I tried nylon cord and it broke, I would try fishing wire but wouldnt it cut through the cable? At the moment I have to use parcel string tied to the cable end, feed it through, then cut the string off at the knot. Surely someone else has an easier/faster way of overcoming this annoying task?
Thanks all
Lee

Get some dental floss (the wider the better) and use that. Very strong and doesn't get in the way, I always carry some in my pouch. It won't cut thru the cable and works great.

Push the coiled cable as far as you can into the shaft, then twist the shaft in a counter-clockwise direction, effectively tightening the coil inside. This makes the coil smaller and can easily be threaded through the shaft.

Get a Sunray X-1 Probe. The coil connection is moved to the outside of the shaft on the switch box. Makes changing the coil a snap.

Gosh I am glad I prefer the stock coil put it together once and its done as I don't take it apart etc. for traveling into places..I used a piece of twine and even on my parlor floor wasn't easy..Have to think that dental floss technique is your best bet..Thats why they make light weight detectors and hipmount versions for this type of hunting...

I may be wrong but I thought all I done was slide the lower shaft all the way into the middle shaft and the connector should pop out the top of the middle shaft. Connect to your control box and then expand for swinging length. Am I misunderstanding the problem???

I have an unbent coat hanger in my truck. I can change coils in about 30 seconds. Works like a charm. It wouldn't have to be but a tad longer than your upper shaft.

He is using a XS and you are are using the 11 model.
Lower rod is different which causes the confusion...
By the way to me lower rod on an Explorer 11 is a big improvement so indeed Minelab little by little is making improvements in its new models both cosmetically and internally...

I'd try sliding the upper rod all the way down to the coil connection which should poke the connector out the top of the rod. Hook it to the head, then slide everything else together. You should be able to stretch the cord enough to get the bottom shaft inserted, then push the cord into the groove of the bottom shaft.
Mine has a piece of nylon "lacing tape" string on the connector. Strong but doesn't take up much room and can be wrapped around the connector easily after hooking it up.

I also must be reading your post wrong. Can't understand why your taking the upper and lower rod apart.Just take the upper loose from the control box and then unplug the cable and slide the upper rod down over the lower to the coil.Doing it this way will still give you 2 peices to carry, not counting your phones and digger. If worst comes to worst, dump some baby powder, the real slick kind, down the inside of the upper shaft to let the cable slide on the plastic rod. New 11 model with improved bottom rods slide easily up and down..how in heavens name you got the XS to slide down that far puzzles me..Perhaps a lubricant such as baby powder would do the trick. Myself would be afraid of breaking same as I have tried it on several XS units to no avail as it really was tight. Also brings up the possibility of having a loose lower rod after all is said and done, thought they were made like this for a purpose..Anyway learn something new every day and hope someone don't cause damage to the rod system, myself would just rather guide it thru with twine...Have to call Minelab on that one....

Hi Dan,I had a 14 in. WOT that I could not do that with. The cable was just a hair too big( dia. ) and would not seat as deep as the cable on the 10.5 in.or the 8in. that I have. The shaft would go down another 3or4ins.if it wasen't for those plastic rivets.Try a little baby powder and also try pushing the cable into the grove a little deeper.Stay away from the grafite ??? powder.I tried it it one time,it worked, but everytime I touched the machine,my hands were black.Mine slips right over and the rod doesn't wobble.I usually don't brake mine down, just put it in the back of the car and ready to go incase I see a good looking place.
