getting silver signals for nails

I went out a couple of days ago to a place where an old toll house had once been. There is a bunch of cut nails where the house used to be. I decided to go out in the field away from where the house had been because of the iron. During my time out I got about 3 or 4 silver readings with both the sound and the screen telling me that the targets were silver. When I dug them up they all turned out to be large cut nails. I went over them after I went over them whith my coild after I had dug them up and I didn't get any signals at all and I didn't get any signals in the hole. Why is this happening? I think i got the same signal with the sensitvity on semi and on manual.

I got the same thing twice last weekend. Turned out to be two large rusty nails, maybe 4 inches long and 3/16 inches thick, 1/4 with rust attached.

Tim,
I have had same problem. The nails are usually older and completely rusted. I think the Halo around the nail causes this to happen. I have learned if I circle the target and swing loop at different angles the sound is not repeatable, it usually is broken , and you will notice the target seems to move. They are signs it probaly is rusty, bent nail. Hope this helps, If Im wrong about Halo Im sure someone will elaborate more
Good Luck
Joe

Guys, you are scaring me. I got rid of my CZ because it registered rusted iron as coins!! Now it sounds that the trusted Explorer has the same blurred vision? What up with that?

Isn't it funny that fisher cz's read iron as coins, so of old square nails have copper in them

Tim,
Just like Joe said to go around from differnt angles and see if you get them from a differnt angle or if they move. If I can get them in the same spot from 2 different angle i will dig if the tone dont change and has helped alot as I still dig some nails but unless i am 100% sure it is junk I will dig.
Rick

This sounds exactly like my rusty nails. Strong coin tone from one angle, slightly different somewhat broken tone from another, heavily rusted.
Thanks!

I don't want to miss out on any good stuff. I guwess I will just dig anything that sounds good at any direcetion the sweep is.

Ken,
With some experience and tips from these fourms I think you will get better at telling some of the good from the bad targets.
One of the things with the Explorer and many of the more sensitive detctors that go deeper is the fact that a lot of junk items will read similar to our good targets, but there will be little telltale signs we have to learn and some we just have to dig because we can not tell for sure and dont want to miss that nice gold ring that everyone else has thought was junk.
Good luck with the Explorer.
Rick

You still will get some spiking, but in my opinion it is way easier to tell.I can't remember the last time I dug a nail that didn't have a non-ferrous target with it.It has been a couple weeks, anyway. But few and far in-between.
