Getting really comfortable with the V3i

Southwind

Well-known member
Went back to the city park this weekend and was really feeling comfortable with the V3i. After having used the E-Trac for 2 years I felt a little lost with the V3i, but now I am very comfortable that I am getting every bit as deep. My buddy(goldinsilver) was swinging his E-Trac and the V3i missed nothing his ET could see. In fact I called a few aluminum pieces he thought would be coins. Iron has become really easy to spot by watching for the red on the right of the 2.5 KHZ bar. Red on the right and it was iron every time. Same with bottle caps. Red on the right of 2.5 KHZ bar.

My goods for the weekend were 7 wheats, 1 rosie(1946) 1 1943-S silver war nickle, a 1940 nickle a ring and a neat key pocketknife.

Glad things are working. Don't forget a video of what your V sounds like on a deep one compared to your buddies E. Set you nickel VDI to a really high tone to let those nickels stand out. ROB

Congrats on your hunt. It is nice when you come up to speed quick on a new machine. I have adjusted very quick with my V3i though my last hunt the falsing issue was tough with one of my coils (6X10). Outside of that I love the machine.

Great tip you said about watching for red. I haven't done it on any one frequency but have noticed when I get VDI's that jump in the 30's - 50's and bars to the far right on the spectragraph (with red at the far end), it also seems to be iron. I'll have to pay more attention to the 2.5 as maybe you are on to something.

Curious - How did you ID the aluminum? If it is single layered and quite small you can easily ID it if you run consistency (mine's at :geek: and fade at 2, as the 2.5 Khz frequency doesn't show much if at all.

Nice finds!! My buddy Texhunter found the exact same looking knife last month at a church. Neat!!

Curious - How did you ID the aluminum?

On the non-uniform canslaw it would show up with an inconsistent VDI and red on the left of the 2.5 & 7.5 KHZ bars. On the more solid aluminum it was by the VDI number. I've used the DFX for 8 years so I'm very familiar with spotting the aluminum signature/tell tale signs.
