Getting ready to be a new Infinium owner

I have been a water hunter for about 5 years now and have used several different units. My first was a Tigershark and loved it for gold just didn't do saltwater well. So I went with an Excalibur II 800, awsome machine but didn't do small gold chains well. So I have been doing alot of reading on the infinium ls and seem to like what I've been reading. I have always wanted to get a pi machine but since most of my hunting revolves around freshwater, I stayed away from them until I read the post about the infinium doing well on freshwater. I think I can really find the jewelry that is missed by myself and others if I take the time to learn this new machine. I will have the 8" mono to start the process since I have read the mono coils have been good on chains. If anyone has any tips or tecniques please feel free to chime in. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Lake Hunter

Check out the forum for a short article by John from Edmonton (http://www.findmall.com/read.php?62,1064686). He is a ring shark using the Infinium in fresh water, as well he plays with Garrett's Stinger and GTI 2500, and he does exceptional well with them too. I also posted a link a few posts previous to yours on a suggested read regarding the Infinium as well (http://www.findmall.com/read.php?62,1247010).

I finally got out today with my new Infinium for the first time, to a local salt water beach for about three hours using the 14" mono coil. No problems at all - it ran quiet even with the waves lapping over the coil as I ran it along the waterline. Not quite as percise in pinpointing compared to my GTI 2500, but the digging is a whole (hole :clapping:) lot easier - until a wave fills it in of course... Dug everything to learn the tones vs. finds - lots more junk than I'm used to. Of the good finds it was only clad coins, but I was just learning the machine, so not too much effort put into time of day/location etc.

There seems to be a lot of nervous people out there when it comes to PIs and their fear of digging a lot of targets. Yet, there are lots of guys running VLFs out there and digging every target. Some people have even stated that PI's don't do well in fresh water. I have no idea where that came from. I have hunted so many different lakes. Some with high alkalinity, some not. They all seem to have the one common denominator, which is lots of caps, pull tabs foil etc in the cut and for a short distance out, depending on the angle of the bedrock. There are sometimes good targets mixed in with the junk, and this area is one to definitely use a VLT with some discrimination. That leaves the rest of the lake for hunting. The Infinium does real well out there. It gets the deep ones missed by others, and also the ones missed by others using discrimination. We all know that once you get beyond the 6" mark, the ability of a metal detector to discriminate effectively starts to drop off. Lots of gold & silver rings have been discriminated out, and we PI hunters pick them up. A place isn't well hunted out until the PI guys have hit it. Are you going to dig more junk targets then using a VLF? Of course. But then, that is what makes metal detecting so much fun. Always wanting to know what a target is and digging it to find out keeps the suspense and the best finds in our scoop. Anyone can hunt water with the disc turned up and hand pick the easy stuff. But that person misses a lot of targets. Some of us are up to the challenge to use PI's and get what others missed.

Read the previous posts and you will get some basics on how the Infinium operates.

The 8" mono coil is an excellent size coil for rings and chains. It will surprise you too for picking up gold rings at 12+ inches. But then again, the Infinium was designed with gold hunting in mind.

Good luck! Hope you have lots of success with your new PI. :)

Steve and John,

Thanks for the info, I have read all the articles several times each already and can't wait for the Infinium. I am sure the learning curve will be time consuming to master but thats what makes it exciting. I know I have missed deeper targets, even with the Excal, so I will find out how many. I try to follow your posts and can't wait for the new ones. I just got rid of my Etrac to get the Infinium. Dirt hunting just isn't my thing when you compare it to water. But lesson learned for me. As a matter of fact my water finds paid for my Etrac and Excal. Dirt hunting has never came close to that for me.

Thanks again and hope to read more of your posts soon,

Lake Hunter (Darryl)

I've also been interested in PI detectors, having used a VLF Fisher 1280x for almost 10 years. As John pointed out, if you choose to use the discrimination you can cut out a lot of digging. On the other hand, I tend to keep the disc level low so I have always ended up with a lot of hair pins, beer caps and other crap but have managed to find a number of rings and earrings. No gold chains but quite a few silver ones. A fellow club member has used a White's PI water machine with some good success in fresh water, hence my interest. Ordered an Infinium demo from Don at North Georgia Relics and after the lengthy delay due to slow Postal service, I am finally awaiting delivery of the new machine. Hoping my former employer, Canada Border Services Agency (customs) doesn't slow the process any more. Keep the posts coming guys. We PI newbies will be soaking up all the info as we learn to use our new equipment. You'll hear the scream when the Infinium arrives.

Thanks to Don for a beauty of a machine at a great price and for such great communication thru the whole process. Time to put it together and to start the learning process.

Gord,

Congrats on the new machine. Let us how how you like it. Hope to see many great finds from you.

Thanks John,

I have been land detecting since 1983 and got my first taste of water hunting 5 years ago and the rest is history.
