I like to play in the woods, splitting wood with a sledge ax and hammer is my cardiac exercise. One pile is wild cherry and the other pile is locust.. When I finish all the trees it will likely be enough to fill up a large tractor trailer dump body with wood. Locust is my favorite, especially when it has been dead for many years, rock solid and burns really well..
I don't git much locust 'round here. A LOT o' wild cherry tho. They are allways fallin in the woods out back.
In fact, we have a lot o' carpenter ants 'round here and they allways keep those wild cherries hollowed out.
Seems every time the wind blows they are fallin over.
Thos carpenter ants are something Jim. They like the maple and hickory trees around here. Half the time you don't know the tree is in trouble until a strong wind storm comes and the tree snaps two feet up from the base onto your house or car. When splitting the wood, the big ants come pouring out. My chickens use to hear the splitter start up and come running to eat the ants and eggs, is was comical. Chickens and especially roosters were fun to have around, and the eggs were real good.
thru cutting all the fallen trees from Irene on my 10 acre lot it will be a mixture of Maple, Hickory, White & Red Oak and Locust...Thank God for wood with the high price of oil...If things keep going up in price we might be living in the early 1900s before long.
Mag........stacking wood the way I do and Vern helps it to season better. Bugs don't like all the open space between the pieces
T-Rick..........I've heard of people using hickory and cherry wood in the grill, but haven't tried it. One man near by purchased some walnut to to put in his smoker. Something to consider the next time I grill......
NIce pile of wood Vern..........I like the shed with the large planks of wood...............looks great...................John[/b]
