Getting permission to hunt on property

Stogger

Member
This may be an off-the-wall question for any who wish to share their knowledge/experience. I'm new to metal detecting and so far have done this on the beach, in my backyard, park, or friend's place.

The question I have is how you go about getting permission from other's property? I'm usually the blunt type and just say "can I metal detect on your property". But I found a few places that are very old structures (1700s) that I want to seek permission, so some things (more than the basic question) come to mind:

-I would inform them that I won't leave gaping holes in their property.
-Some places it is obvious I wouldn't want to dig because of manacured grass, etc.
-How do you deal with who keeps what? In some cases like around historical churches, I would want any relics I found to remain with the church (I just think that would be the right thing to do). But other places, it would be nice to be able to keep old coins, etc.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Mike

As in most of Lifes successes, its all about timing, and showing up prepared to hunt at the Right time of course.....!

Expect a lot of "No's" until you figure this out...get really good and fast at hunting a place, without leaving a trace you were there...you dont want to waste a whole lot of effort on a particular location that has been hunted by a Pro in the past...should only take you 15 minutes or less to figure out if its a good spot or not....dont over think this or throw-up all sorts of dialog about holes, sharing finds, and whatnot...heck, a kid or a renter may answer the door!

Dress nice and smile..lots of posts have been written about this subject, and 'door knocking' is an acquired skill...theres no two situations alike, and its all about timing...

I just tell them straight up in a bold non-threatening voice, with friendly but assertive eye contact... depending upon who answers the door,..."I'm here to metal detect your property...I live right around the corner, and would like to give this place a quick sweep"...or something to that effect...so its not really 'asking' per se.....then hold eye contact with a smile and wait for their reply....its either gonna be 'OK', or 'GetLost', or perhaps furthur dialog will ensue, you can always plead your case and beg if they default to saying an immediate "No" what have you got to lose at that point?..make it funny and non-threatening...sort of like getting permission to hunt or trap back in the day when it was fashionable..."c'mon! I need the excersize"!

Some of the brothers here on the Forum got this worked down to a science, with a business card, format and everything...I just wing it....but then again, I'm used to getting a lot of "No's" so it does'nt bother me...been married for 35+ yrs..

Thanks for your input here!!....and for a good laugh as well! I agree with not getting into to many details at first. Not sure I'll try the "I'm here to metal detect your property" in this locale. I can already hear the "the hell you will" response. But the "I live right around the corner..." might work, since the places are close by. Today, I asked one person managing a place (built in 1700s). at first it seemed no-go, then I asked if there is any particular location they think would be a good spot, and that they would want me to metal detect to see if I can find some artifacts. He seemed more positive here and is going to ask the owner....at least not a no yet. Anyway, there are lots of potential spots in this area. It'll be fun to see how things pan out. Also I'm learning a great deal more about the history here (west of central Virginia) then before I purchased the detector.
