Getting off to a good start

New X-Terra 70 will be in some time next week. I can't wait.

I have been reading this forum and the FAQ's and will read the manual when it gets here.

Looking for any tips/techniques to get off to the best start I can. Any help appreciate.

I will be looking for coins, jewelry etc... around older parks, school and foundations as well as going to local tot lots. I am sure there are a few other detectorist in the area but can not find anything to indicate any type of club, so I will be learning on my own.

Is this your first detector? My advice will be different for someone new to the hobby as opposed to someone who has detected before. But in either regard, lots of good folks on here who will try to help you out. HH Randy

I have done a little detecting many years ago. I have a Tesoro Mayan that I bought new probably 20 years ago. I it pulled out of mothballs and have been using the last few weeks.

I suspect it little resembles the X-Terra 70 though.

Since you are not new to detecting, I won't go into some of the basics. However, you will be surprised at the functionality of the X-70, compared to the Mayan. Once you set the GB and sensitivity, I suggest that you run in a preset Pattern for the first few hours. That will automatically limit the number of "trash targets" you hear. Try changing some of the variables like number of audio tones, tracking, noise channels etc. After you get use to the sounds and features, set up one of the Patterns to represent the settings you like the best. I like to run mine in all metal with 4 tones. I have learned to simply ignore the low tones, recognizing them as ferrous (typcially iron in the places I hunt). You will occassionally get a high tone, TID 48, on iron. But it usually don't repeat from all directions. Plus, in the all metal mode you can almost always get a low "burp" audio, prior to the high tone, as the coil approaches the target. If you haven't read the piece I wrote for coin shooting with the X-Terras, I invite you to take a look at them. They, along with some other great articles, are posted toward the top of this page under the post FAQ FAQ. Pay particular attention to the 3 consistencies I talk about. Consistent audio, consistent location and consistent TID. Most importantly, enjoy yourself. Learn the detector and just have fun. And, if you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to ask. Lots of great folks on this forum. HH Randy
