Getting Confused On T2 Settings?

Geriatrix

New member
hi all, l`m new to this forum being a new T2 user, my names Karl and l`m in the UK.

l find these type of forums a wealth of useful info, especially for newbies. The only problem is, l think l`ve read something useful and can`t wait to put it to the test, only to read something conflicting a few minutes later!

l had exactly the same problem on the XP Owners Forum...so much so that my head starts overloading with too much info and l end up disappearing down my own hole :goodnight:

l read earlier about setting the disc to 21, tone 1 to maximise iron while still finding good stuff, minutes later l see another guy recommending running at disc 10, tone 4, which incidently my only 2 trips out with my T2 l`ve been using close to..12 to be precise. Then l read in Treasure Hunting mag that a guy has found that setting disc over 3 or more starts to impact on depth, and then the disc set at over 52 the depth starts to normalise back to optimum depths?

Can someone please clarify best settings for , ie trashy sites, highly mineralised sites etc...basically our UK ancient sites?l appreciate soil conditions are going to vary over the country but a rough datum point would be useful.

First time out, yesterday, l used sens 60 - 70, disc 12 (mostly, but did lower at times with little adverse effect) and tones +2.l was on a well worked site that has had finds going back to the bronze age, right up to modern with everything inbetween.Needless to say its a favourite site, its not been properly ploughed for a couple of years , farming techniques today don`t make it cost effective to deep plough, its a case of dragging and drilling as soon as possible.

Its had 2 or 3 crops of winter turnips over the last couple of years, cattle eating this down supplemented with hay. When the cattle come off the farmer brings in loads of waste straw/bedding which in turn is left to rot and then is dragged in.These are the conditions l`m faced with on this site, ie not having a deep ploughing stuff is getting harder to find, but as its the only place l know of that produces Saxon sceattas its worth sticking with it

We`ve not been on it since October last year and were surprised to see the field was almost the in the same condition as the last trip when we`d hammered the field on 5 or 6 trips, both of us using XP GMP`s!Only difference was the cattle had levelled a few areas that had had tractor tyre ruts.So l was`nt hopeful, however first ever signal with my T2 was a George 3rd halfpenny, not a small coin by any means, so l was encouraged.

To cut a long story a bit shorter, l found the 1/2d, 2 Roman grots, a small advertising disk (Clothe Your Boys At Dixon & Parker date unknown?) a strange cone shaped piece of copper sheet use unknown, and a good dozen or so small bits of lead dross. All this on a site that 2 XP GMP`s had hammered for weeks and l thought the GMP`s left very little behind.l was well impressed with the T2.

However, went back today, along with my mate and his GMP and found nothing but 5 more bits of lead, its such a large field that l stayed clear of going over the parts l did yesterday.Basically what l`m saying is l`m confused lol...

cheers all

karl why post about u.k settings on an american site ,there is a uk based forum at www.teknetics-owners.com and you would be better asking on there unless your already a member ??i have had the t2 in the u.k for longer than most and i can assure you the only basic setings you need are
sens 72
disc 10
tones either 2+ or 4
thats it simple if you have clean ground up the sens if bad lower the sens only rarely is a higher disc needed ,when you know how to use the machine and what its telling you then play with all metal but not till you understand it in disc mode
only dig signals that register over 43-45 as that is coke below that is iron .a simple setting guide in the queens english

Thats all l needed to know ,thank you.

No need to be so offish, the simple fact is l signed up for the UK site yesterday morning and am still waiting for a confirmation email that l`ve been accepted. At this time l can`t so much as login, l therefore thought l`d ask on here.

l read all the relevant posts, yours included, and began to get a little disorientated, as it was yourself, being UK based, l was hoping would reply, and you have, its worked out pretty well for me.

Again l thank you, but if this is the sort of snooty reply l`m likely to get in the future l don`t think l`ll bother.

`Simple setting guide in the queens english` indeed :please:

Feel free to post over here any time my friend and hope some of us might help you, T-2 is a T-2 no matter what country your in! Regards Tom

I always use what works for me with any detector. Forum information and tips is great but in the end, its what works for you.
That said, PF mode worked best for me on the T2 I tried out around old iron filled sites. Set the disc just high enough to eliminate most of the iron falsing and to accommodate your tolerance for "noise" (disc 21 or 22 usually) . The disc setting will vary according to the predominate iron size and amount, ground conditions (amount of moisture) ect. Use of higher disc settings or multi tone modes eliminated many of the diggable signals I found using PF mode calling them out as iron when they were in fact non-ferrous targets of many sizes and conductivities.

for a start it was not meant as a snotty reply ,i was unsure if you were the same bloke that joined the u.k forum hence the ?? as you are using to completly different user names ,i only posted to help you out whether you take that advice is up to you entirely .
uncle tom although the machines are the same judging by the settings i have seen mentioned on here over the last couple of years the u.k way and the usa way are totally different ,if we used your higher disc settings we would wipe out most of our thin section hammered coins as well as cut halfs and quarters and most roman coins ,fortunately for you you do not have pick finds out from among 2500 years worth of iron in varying states of decay .we do hence the recommended settings

coenwolf, Very good points you made, I have no knowledge of what you must deal with and that does make all the difference in the world. No offence intended sir and good hunting to you. Regards Tom

Coenwolf, l`m sorry if you did`nt mean your reply to come across as `high handed`, the tone to me sounded unwelcoming.

As explained, l have tried to join the UK forum and STILL have no confirmation email and therefore no access to the boards?Obviously not welcome there either lol.

l saw no harm in inquiring on here as there is, not only yourself but a couple of other UK based guys too. Thanks to the US guys heads up :bouncy:

Again l thank you for clearing up my confusion, l was actually using roughly those settings anyway, but having read the latest TH mag l was wondering what the guy was getting at with his graphs etc ref the discrim.

He does`nt go on to explain how to put his findings into practice...he suggests, the depth drops dramatically on discrim settings from 3 - 52, ie max depth below 4 and levelling off back to max depths when discrim is set over 52?

Obviously a discrim setting of 3, to keep max depth is unrealistic as small ferrous is too much of a problem, conversely, a setting of 53 and up is going to be detrimental on non ferrous, wanted, targets?

Whats the compromise?Max depth on our ancient sites is not an issue as you`re not going to acheive it so yes, the setting you`ve given are excellent, but on clean plough soil or pasture its would be useful to get max depth.Has anyone, UK based, as l don`t think many of you US based guys will have read the TH article?, put his findings to the test?

l realise its only a small point but l found his graphs interesting, the rest of the actual `field tests` /article l found hard going and may has well be in Mandarin Chinese

uncle tom thank you ,its very hard to write and express what is actually meant and as stated i was only trying o help him

o.k now were getting there ,the settings i have given you are the ones in general use in the u.k .raising the disc imho is only needed in extreme conditions and once you really know the machine .like wise raising the sens will make a mish mash of the audio .using those settings i gave you i haved pulled up roman fibula from at least 15 inches and lots of other goodies from very good depths as well .as for the u.k site you will get your e/mail it has to be actioned by toddy and theres lots of of people joining at the moment plus he is having problems with his isp

the settings are what you use coonwolf, and are not standard ,in the UK, as a user long before you, I disagree, mineralised ground can make a huge difference to your settings, depth of top soil ,plus iron content can vary so much,so will you stop saying that your settings are standard in the UK.THEY ARE NOT.

hi JM,

thats interesting, what standard settings do you apply? My main sites are Roman, obviously where we are is going to differ slightly ,l understand that.

l have had 4 Roman grots on my first 2 outings, 2 on rough ploughed soil, which impressed me, l been on there with other machines over the years when its been flat rolled and come away with nothing before now!

Thanks in advance,

Karl

mr moore before you start all your usual argy bargy and total lies which no one really wants to hear ,might i just remind you that i had a t2 a couple of months before you ,and if my memory serves me correctly the first one you had was sent back immediately for repair ,just go on the uk site to check on general settings ,oops i forgot you can't your banned :nopity:

It was`nt my intention to start a handbag slinging match guys! :starwars:

l just wanted advice on settings, l have Coenwolf`s, thanks, but JM yours l don`t have so l can`t compare and comment. :surrender:
