getting coils retuned

according to tesoro, you can only have one coil totally tuned to the machine.does this mean that youre not getting the most out of the different coils you have? does this mean my 10inch widescan is loosing depth because its not recalibrated like the stock coil?
just like a few opinions from those that have alot of different coils.thanks. i use the cibola and love it.

It's my understanding that unless there is a significant mismatch that most coils will work okay. If one uses a particular coil 90% or more, then it may be worthwhile to send in the machine and coil to get the very most possible out of it. I"ve used coils from the 4" to 10.5 " on several machines with no problems and switched the 8" donut back and forth with the 9X8 with good results. If you seem to be getting decent depth and things work okay, I wouldn't worry too much about it. My two bits.

Sort of correct, but I question it. IF a detector was crystal controlled for a very uniform operating frequency, and if each search coil had to be calibrated (tuned) for a very tight specific operating tolerance, and then if the particular unit had the GB tweaked for that coil, then yes, that might be correct.

But that's not how it is with Tesoro's. Tesoro uses a PPL or LCO type principle and the search coils are certainly tuned for a particular performance level, but think about it. The coils for the general-use models can work on everything from the 9.6 kHz Shadow X2 to the various models currently/recently offered that operate at a listed 10 kHz, 12 kHz, 12.5 kHz, or the ones at 10.6 kHz units that have a frequency shift to opt for 10.4 kHz or 10.2 kHz, as well as the Golden Sabre Plus that was listed at 15 kHz. That's quite a spread for a search coil to be tuned for, per se.

Then look at the upper-end Cibola, Vaquero, Tej

If you had a machine with manual GB, one option is to have one coil tuned for DISC (preset GB) and one set up for all metal (manual GB). But that is only possible on a machine where the manual GB does not affect the DISC mode.

Cortes or Lobo are two detectors that answer to this requirement.

Thanks Monte !

That was a great practical description.
