getting close to buying a detector but cant decide

How's your money situation? Both are great machines.

I will be able to get either one KinTN, but if i get the safari, i can buy one or two things to go with the safari, if i get the explore then wont be able to buy extras.

New England Detectors are another dealer to consider. Browse all the forums and see what folks are saying. The same names shine over and over. Kinda near you is Detector Depot in Knoxville. He has a brick and mortar store, but it isnt a MD store; but is a honest guy to deal with.

Mtnmn you are correct in your info about the Explorer SE.

December 31st, 2012 is the last day you can purchase. This includes their coils as well but there will still be a three year warranty.

TAKEN FROM MINELAB'S WEBSITE:

Minelab is discontinuing 2 of its existing products as of December 31st, 2012. These are:

Don't get a Safari...

First you'd have a lot of competition here and we like to find stuff and don't need it.

Second you'll be finding way to much and having to make all those annoying posts and announcments about all those goodies you unearth using a Safari.

Third, you'll have to become a digital camera and video camera expert so that your Safari's finds can be seen by many others...

So in summary, don't get a Safari if your not ready to committ to joining a unique set of Minelab owners who semingly outpace a lot of others out in the "find fields"...

Lol

Tongue in cheek above. Safari is a great machine... before you know it you'll be
:detecting: and then doing a lot of

Ditto, ditto and triple ditto what edjcox just affirmed.
I have other detectors but my Safari is my go to machine and almost always in my right hand. I have found many gold and silver rings, gold and silver jewellery and collectible coins in many different scenarios both here and abroad in Europe. It would be great if the screens were backlit but there are mod's that you can do to backlight the screen (see mod's forum).
The only downside is you cannot go into the water (fresh or salt) with either a Safari or Explorer so you would need another M.D. to allow you to do that. Minelab has accomplished that with the CTX3030 (submersible to 10ft) but I don't want to spend the big $'sss on that just yet.
My favorite is the ATPro for submersible/surf salt and fresh water detecting which I also have and use frequently.
Not knowing what you are wanting to detect i.e.gold and silver rings, jewellery, relics etc; and also where you want to detect i.e. beaches, desert, parks etc; is a factor but between the 2 and considering both are Minelab machines and great all rounders, you cannot go wrong with either of the 2 models but as you stated, if you bought a Safari, you will have a few extra $'s to spend on other stuff.
I do not own an Explorer so I cannot give you any feedback on that machine but have only heard good things about it. Let us know what you decide!

In my test garden, the safari was nulling on my deep coins, with the explorer with its wider choice of settings, I was hitting the deep coins, and they were ID'ing as such.
