Getting back into the swing of things...

I was starting to get an attitude toward gaining permission after trying to deal with a couple local businesses. Yesterday, I could not reach the land owner of a couple fields. I decided to head down there anyway and knock on some doors. Lo and behold the gate was open to the fields and outbuildings. I met the owner, his wife and dog... They were the nicest folks ever. They even thanked me for the education (I showed them the old maps of the area)! They had no idea that there were three buildings in their fields back in 1860-1870.

The hunt was fun on a nice warm afternoon. I dug quite a few non-ferrous junk items and ended up with a few goodies. The 1865 Indian head is in super shape (better than the scan). That is half of a Chinese coin and the worst beat up large cent I have ever found (1842). The LC looks to me like it was intentionally beat with a hammer of something.

Fun to get out and find stuff! HH - BF

 Love that green indian...nice finds !!

Man, that is so cool ! HH

There has to be some 2 cent pieces there BF. They sound a little different in the field, but if you are finding coins at that age... they are there. Locate the old road coming in and hit it going toward the buildings. That LC just looks like the old plows got to it. Ive seen them bent, gouged, and really disfigured. You may have a killer spot if those buildings were homes and gone before the early 1900s. Ive found the later they were there the more dirt that was moved and trash you have to dig thru... like plumbing, electric, and modern crap. Good luck...

Neat finds and congratulations on getting a new site to hunt. That large cent is interesting - about the only portion that is not messed up is the date which is as clear as a bell. That is a super nice Indian Head. Whenever I get permission to hunt a place, I sometimes give the owners a coin or other find. Sometimes, if I find a lot of stuff, I even put together a little collection using a small display case (butterfly box). The owners really get a kick out of it and it helps to open sites with their friends and neighbors. HH
