Germany

Try on a German Treasure forum.:beers:

I thought detecting was pretty much a NO NO in Germany. Rob

No rob, it does varies where in Germany you are i.e. Sachsen and such. Some do take it more easily then others. Also I want to recall you need a permit or license or something like that.

Rob, there is a website I've seen that details the md'ing laws of all the European countries. And yes, most of them seem downright dire to detecting, if not supposedly out-right illegal. At least that is the feeling a person reading this site might come away with. But in each of those supposedly off-limits (or severely restricted) countries, md'rs are all over the place. There's even dealers, etc... And if you were to ask persons in those countries "I thought md'ing was illegal there, according to this & such web-site?", they'd say "that only applies to public or state or federal land. It doesn't apply to farmer's fields, that you can hunt with permission till you're blue in the face. Or even to the extent that the laws might seem to say that it applies to all land, everywhere, the local md'rs will tell you that you're ok, as long as you stick to non-archaeologically sensitive sites. Or quite frankly, they just hunt so far back in the forests, there's no one there to care or complain anyhow.

Check with local authorities in areas you want to detect. For example I detected an area of Italy that states it is illegal to detect. I went to the local comune (city hall) and the officer wrote a note and stamped it with the local seal and told me to show it anyone who asks what I am doing, so I would stay out of trouble. He also told me not to destroy anything and clean up after myself and stay away from known areas of archaeologist sites, and one other request, he wanted to see what I found since he was very interested in Roman coins.

What part of Italy? I want to go to Italy m`self.

There are some regions of Italy that do allow metal detecting such as the Campania snd Umbria region, where I detected was South of Campania in Calabria where detecting is not allowed except on the beach, but I was staying with my family and I just detected the area. I found some old coins, oldest was 1883 Victor Emmanuelle coin and some Euros. Overall it was a nice experience.
