Germany

Hello,

I am new to detecting and was curious if anyone currently or has dectected in Germany. I have an older Fisher metal detector and have researched the laws to detecting here. I am a U.S. Soldier Stationed in Heidelberg. I am itching to get started. I have tried to look up sites for Roman Battles, but my German is scetchy at best. I am trying to learn the language and the hobby. Any Help will be appreciated.

Thank You,

Louis

I have talked to several military guys here, who were stationed at our American bases over there, who had no problem detecting. You may, I'm sure, find scary wording that seems to say you can't, but that probably refers to federally owned sites, or historic monuments, etc... (no different than laws you would find in the USA). Or the laws may pertain to exports, shipwreck salvor type stuff, etc... Nothing to stop you from hunting a farmers field with permission, for instance. Or quite frankly, the persons I talked were out in the forests far away enough, that no one gave a hoot. There are hobbyists there, dealers, etc..., so obviously it is going on :)

Another fellow I talked to, was stationed in Germany, at our bases in Berlin, when the wall fell in 1989. He drove over into the previous communist Russia, drove to isolated towns (far from the WWII activity), and found the parks to be loaded with silver coins (nothing particularly old though, as he didn't hunt older ruins and villas/fields and such). He also had no problem there, except for one time: A mayor or alderman or someone came up to him, and told him that he must turn in anything old or valuable, that he found. Once again, no different than a busy-body at a typical american park here, eh?

An of course the individual would be happy to turn in the valuables for him....

BS

Check in with the local PD and ask...

Historical artifacts are protected and if it really is significant any ethical detctor would do the right thing..

That was the case Tom but there are regions where detecting is no longer allowed for the general public. I would ask an English speaking local to find out the exact rules for the area involved. Most areas are still O.K. subject to not going on protected sites and permission must be obtained from the landowner.

Check my response over on the findmall Fisher forum - Andreas Meyer is your man.
