Polishing is a great way to clear up a marble. Unfortunately it's time consuming and you need some equipment. The easy way is a good cleaning with soap and water using an old toothbrush. Then soak in an oil (crisco, baby oil, etc.) for a while so it soaks into all the nooks and crannies. Then wipe it off and it should look clearer.

I remember as a kid, my brothers had marbles and they always had a smaller brown one,, but it was not made out of the same material as the regular marbles..I think they called it a "nib"...It was so different from the others...

do I see some "nibs' in the top right hand photos in the right center compartment.....can't find these anywhere, but would like to...also I have a question:

What is the difference between an "agate " and a "marble"...it seems we called all of them just "agates' way back when...thanks in advance for your reply

If you're talking about the tan, dull colored ones, they're clay marbles. Hand rolled and then baked in an oven or set on top of a radiator. The blue and brown splotched ones with them are Benningtons.

Agates(aggies) are ground from quartz. Regular marbles are glass. Regular marbles are either handmade (cut one at a time from a cane, then rounded) or machine made in mass quantity.

Except for all the cats eyes, the marbles you see were dug from an old dump. Thousands and thousands of marbles were dug there. People would go out there and sift dirt from sun up till sun down. A warehouse now sits on that location:sad:

I prefer the handmade marbles, but still like some of the special machine mades.
