There are many Excal users in this forum and several new ones. And probably a few that are thinking about getting one. The thing I like best about it is the variable tones, which are very much like the Sovereign series...the Excal essentially being a waterproof Sovereign.
It's true that it's generally best to "dig it all" at the beach, and I dig a lot. But I don't dig it ALL. I pass up what I know to be bottlecaps and sometimes pennies. But for the most part I dig them too, just to be sure. But when I hear GOLD, especially in the surf, I know how hard I should work for a target. If it's a penny, not too hard!
Here are some sounds I just recorded this evening, from my Excal, using actual finds from the beach...some recent, some older. If you're an experienced Excal user then they will be familiar to you. If not, maybe you will find it of interest. I'm going to try and work on putting up a web page with the pics to match the sounds when I have the time.
Here they are in the order of tone. They're all a little over 300K in size so may be a bit slow loading on dialup, but should play eventually...someday!
A "Fatty" silver ring...

A 14K medium men's diamond ring...

These next 3 are almost too close to call. This illustrates why knocking out aluminum trash items is a bad idea...because pulltabs and other aluminum sounds a lot like many gold rings. And nickels are in there too.
A Nickel...

An 18K anchor/eagle pendant from a men's gold chain...

A thin ladie's 18K ring with opal...

A 1" x 1" square of aluminum foil...very similar to the small gold, but with a slight "sickly" quality...
http://members.cox.net/nodesurfer/ExcalSounds/Foil.wav
A bottlecap...and these vary, but often sound like a fart...

Anyway, I've wanted to do that for a while...just to do it. I used Windows Sound Recorder and a small microphone with the Excal in "Auto" sens to make it stable in the house and then just passed the items in front of the coil, trying to make the sounds as clean and crisp as possible. Hopefully it's either helpful or interesting to somebody.
