Generosity Bites Me In the ...

I have a good relationship with a land-baron farmer around here. Over the years I have been generous sharing finds, and last year I even gave him a nice large cent and civil war buttons. He was very thankful. He did mention a couple times that his one son would like the coins. Well, I talked to the wife yesterday about getting permission to hunt some of their fields. She said she would have to ask her husband, but that the one field would most likely be off limits because they knew the people who use to live there. She added that her son is seriously considering getting into detecting and this would be saved for him.

This sounds like the squeak of the door slamming shut to me. I am stopping by this morning to get the word, but I doubt it will be good. I am going to offer to help out the son with getting started detecting.

So here is the short deal: I gave the farmer nice old coins, he gave them to the son, son thinks about detecting, now permission may be harder to get. First time this has happened to me. Usually if you give the owner some coins they are thrilled and happy to have you come back.

Anybody else have a similar problem?

Two things that I should have done different: Talk to the farmer, not the wife, and maybe give away cruddy coins...

Thanks and HH - BF

You may feel that it has worked against you, and indeed you may not be hunting that land for the time being, but word may spread of you sharing, and other lands open up to you

The son may find out that it is not as easy as it looks. Lots of hours put in, false signals dug, etc

Not every target is a nice find, and he may get discouraged
