General "toughness" of the V3i

WyomingMedic

Howdy from Wyoming,

I have been detecting for a few years, and recently ordered (but not received yet) a V3i. Looks like it will be a MASSIVE jump in technology from my current stock.

My family owns a number of ranch lands and turn of the century homesteads that have never been detected. We also have access to old mining camps and other small settlements that are completely off the map,on private property, and have never been searched.

Suffice it to say, I'm excited.

What I am worried about is the robustness or toughness of the V3i. Can I get coil covers for this? Most of the trips will be offroad in a truck for a few hours, then a few hours on the back of a 4 wheeler. I know that the V3i isn't waterproof (other than the coil), but we don't have much water here anyway.

Am I looking for trouble, or with some care, will the V3i last for me?

Thanks,
WM

Welcome to the Forums! I can attest to the build quality of White's machines. I started with a White's back in the 80's and it was built like a tank. I don't think you will have any problems in that department. With that said, you should always try to take care of your machine. I suggest getting a padded case and bungee it down. Taken care of, that machine will last you a VERY long time! Good luck with you hunting, gotta say I am a bit jealous!

Thanks for the kind hello.

I will see what kind of case I can get for it. Any recommendations? I am generally a fairly tech gentle kind of feller. And for the price, I don't want to trash it. I do worry about the coil because I will be searching on a lot of rocks. Is there a snap on cover that will save the coil a bit? If not, I may make something.

My greatest fear would be to roll my wheeler while the V3i was on it :O

I've always wanted to search these areas, but I just never have. They have been in the family for years, but with my previous detector, I just didn't feel the desire to hunt them. Too much snow to hit them right now, but I will take the time locally to get comfortable with the machine for a few months before hitting the main events next summer.

I attached a few pics of the still standing 1938 trappers cabin, and the 1860 collapsed homestead.

Here is a better homestead pic.

I have yet to find a detector that is better built than White's and coil covers are sold by every dealer or from the company. http://whiteselectronics.com/product.html

Excellent!! I will get some coil covers coming tomorrow

Maybe you should consider a hard case for it. I think the hard case is a pain to use, but if you're worried about rolling your ATV, then the hard case might up your alley. Good luck! Nice Pics!

I have been thinking of that. I can get Pelican rifle cases for fairly cheap.

I see that White's has a hard side case on their website. It isn't too expensive (when compared to a $1500 detector). Big and bulky and not for everyday use, but during the extreme 4x4, it woul dbe safer.

White's sells two sizes of foam lined hard cases. Check this link: http://whiteselectronics.com/products/accessories/carrying-cases.html

I suggest you call the White's factory about which of their hard cases would best serve your need ... ask for Steve Howard : 1-541-367-6121 ext 135
