G'day - Another Newbie Here

New member
G'day everyone

Just thought I would say hello.
My Name is Ashley, and I am from Frankston which is in Victoria Australia.

I have only just made up my mind and sold all my guns and rifles as they have not been used for the last 8 years.

I do allot of Camping a 4x4 driving, and just have not had the chance to use my guns.

So I thought why not just sell them and get myself a Metal / Gold detector.

SO I have bought myself a X Terra 70.

So I am brand new to all this stuff.

I have only used it 3 times along the beach, but hoping to get to the Golden Triangle soon.

I have no idea what all the lingo is, such as Ground Balance, Threshold, Sensitivity and all the other lingo.
But I suppose there is only one way to find out, and that is to get out there and get amongst it..

I hope to learn allot in here with all you guys.
And I hope I do not annoy you all to much with some of my Basic Questions.

Thanks for listening...

Take Care

Ashley...

G'day Ashley.
The forum is all about asking questions and learning from each other. Not to mention, having a few laughs along the way. There are plenty of brains to pick here, and it would be rare that you can't get an answer.
I just had a look at the year book (last months edition) of the Australian Gem & treasure mag and there are 2 clubs close to your location. 1)Moorabin Prospecting & Camping club. PO BOX 2449, Moorabin,3189. 2)Victorian Metal Detector& Prospecting Assn. PO BOX 814, Dandenong,3175. Sorry about the Addresses. That's all there is. If you can contact them, it will make learning your detector a lot easier. If you can buy the current edition of the Gem and treasure magazine, as well as the Nov2006, Dec 2006 and Jan/Feb 2007 editions as well, then you will get some good write ups on the X-Terr 70. The articles are about using it in the Victoria Golden Triangle. The mag sells at most Newsagents.
Also advertising in there, is a Company that runs detecting courses around the Maryborough area. Well worth considering.
Good luck with your new machine and be patient with yourself while you learn and have fun.

Hello Ashley,

Welcome to the X-Terra forum, and FindMall. I have a question for you about your guns. I just received an email telling about how all Australians were forced to turn in their guns due to gun control, and how the crime rate has risen to extreme levels. Now you post about selling your guns. Can you tell me if there is any truth to this email posted below? Are you allowed to own guns? Just curious.

From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia

Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now in:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,

Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent ;

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.

(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not and criminals still possess their guns!) DUH

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.

Australian politicians are at a loss (?) to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in "successfully ridding Australian society of guns." You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.

The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note Americans, before it's too late!

Thanks, and good hunting with you new X-Terra,
OldeTymer

It's probably true Olde Tymer.
Read a post here about 12 months ago about an armed robber who tried to rob a gun shop in Washington DC that specialised in selling hand guns. After walking past the Police car that was parked out the front of the shop (the police Officer was at the counter in the shop having a cup of coffee and talking to the shop owner) and not being put off by the fact that the shop was full of customers, the robber walked into the shop, pulled out his gun and declared that this is a 'robbery'!
The coroners inquest identified 25 bullets from 7 different hand guns in the robbers body.:nopity:
Mmmm.

Hi Ashley, I also am new to detecting and have an XT70. I found the DVD that came with the machine to be very good. I have watched it several times to cover things that I missed. So if you have it, give it a look see !! If you dont, then I am sure there is somewhere on the net where you can see it. If that fails, I can run you off a coppy and post it to you.
I have been doing a lot of practicing in the back yard with different targets, farmiliarising myself with the XT70. When time permits, I will be out there.
Oh and by the way, I live just down the road in Geelong :)
Hope this helps.......regards, Paul
