GB2 vs GB pro ?

If the GB2 was such a sucessfull design why did Fisher change it so much for the new GB pro? How do they compare in the small gold department 71 khz vs 19 khz? Looking at getting a gold machine and wondering if I need the old or new.

Nothing beats the sensitivity of the Gold Bug 2. They have not changed it because there is no need to.

The GB Pro is toned down a bit and while primarily designed for gold hunting, it's lower frequency compared to the GB2 gives it applications beyond that, such as relic hunting and gold jewelry hunting.

The GB2 will absolutely find gold jewlery also, better than the GB Pro in fact, but it is so senstitive, that even in places with mild trash, some users found themselves running ragged chasing down tiny tiny pieces of metal. A lot of people found it exhausting.

The GB Pro is very sensitive too and will hit on very small gold and other metal targets, just not the extent of the GB2.

Put it this way: with the Gold Bug Pro you'll be digging too much. With the Gold Bug 2, it won't even be worth your time getting off your knees.

The Gold Bug Pro is not exactly but somewhat like my Xterra 705 Gold w/ 6" DD HF coil at 18.75kHz and will detect larger gold down deeper than the Gold bug 2 and is great for other coin, relic hunting etc....but that Gold Bug 2 with the 6.5" coil screams on very small flakes of gold up near the surface where my 705 barely hears it at the surface 2".....The Gold Bug 2 is still very much in production today and cost about $100 more than the Gold Bug Pro which is a very very good machine..... you just need to decide what type of detecting you want to do.
