Sensitivity setting 85, Ground balanced, then Disc setting 31 and away you go :super:

I note you used a Sensitivity setting of '85.' I just wonder if:

A Maximum setting of '100' was too noisy?

Do you feel that with the '85' Sensitivity setting, detection depth and general performance is close enough to the maximum setting of '100'?

With the Discrimination set at '31', do you always hunt those sites in the Discriminate mode, even though many older coins and such were rather small, and/or deep?

Thanks for answering,

Monte

Hi Monte,

Sensitivity set at 100 is fine on the majority of sites.... but on sites with deep flat iron along with a lower discrimination setting of 31 it's hard work, even with discrimination set at 43/45 to reject coke it will accept more flat iron. It's the nature of the high frequency as I'm sure your aware. So I tend to run at sensitivity 85 for a while, pushing it up to as far as I can until flat Iron starts coming through the discrimination again.

A sensitivity setting of 85 is fine and a safe bet for any inland site. One point to add, as along with too high a discrimination setting, a high sensitivity can and will cause non ferrous target masking in heavy iron/mineralised ground.

Hence my choice of low discrimination/sensitivity settings until I'm sure I can get away with it.

There is too much Iron in general on the sites I search over here although if I do get lucky enough to come across a nice find then I'll search in all metal for the next half an hour to see if it's got any friends ;-)

Terry.

I have the Gold bug dp and on the Celtic and Roman sites that we have over here i find that i can run the Gold bug on 100 sensitivity most of the time, i also set the discrimination at 27 or 30 as a discrimination setting of 40 will mask out good targets that lay close to iron.
I have found that the Gold Bug can get a little noisy on one part of the field that has a lot of iron trash in it and i turn the sensitivity down to 90 or 85 when detecting in this area, I have found that i have to turn the discrimination up on my Tesoro detectors to compensate when detecting in the same area.
I have to go out now but i will try and post my thoughts and finding on the Gold Bug when i have a bit more time. you take care Les in the UK
