GB in and out of tracking.

Hi everyone, just a quick question on GB. With my X-70 I usually just auto GB, but I'm wondering if I can turn on ground tracking to GB then after a few swings turn off tracking. Will the unit then hold onto the last GB from the tracking mode. Is there any advantage to GB this way over auto or manual GB ?

Thanks,
Dave

When you break it down, Tracking is basically automatic GB "on the fly". In other words, we can use auto GB to initially set the GB. And we can use tracking to compensate for the mineralization under the coil at any specific time during a hunt. So to answer your question, you can do that. Lots of folks do. However, know that the instant you switch off tracking, the GB will remain on the setting that was last established. If you happen to have the coil over some object (other than the soil) when you turn off tracking, the GB will be set at a level to compensate for that object. HH Randy

Do you guys use the auto track? I felt that if i continue to go over alot of iron that it would set the gb wrong....any input?

I use Tracking when hunting for gold, nuggets and species, in mineralised ground. Now and then hitting the Track button to initiate fast track if things sound wierd or I think its not quite keeping up due to a strange ground make up. Sort of reminding it when it gets lazy or confused.
But when I hunt coins and relics I am really hesitant to use tracking and use Fixed. With my 70 I will find a quiet spot of ground just like Im going to hunt in and then go into my chosen pattern and ground balance using, cos im lazy, auto track then switch back to fixed when its done.
Echoing sort of what Digger said I think that as the tracking tries to compensate for a target you may/will get a wrong ID call.

Hey Nugget, I suppose you have heard that Minelab have announced the new GPX4500. They did the other day at a gold festival here in Vic.
All I know is that it has better discrimination, sound/tone seperation, and improved depth. Have not seen one yet but hope its a goody.

http://www.findmall.com/read.php?34,674914,674914#msg-674914 Check it! They also talk about the new GPX 4500 a few posts below on the PI Tech forum. I hear its more of a tweaked 4000 with better stability and more lcd options. I reckon with the new line of coils from coiltek its gonna be a winner. If only they could come up with a discrim feature like a VLF unit or better.
Cheers!

I'm certainly going after a GPX-4500. Release date is in about 2 weeks here. My X-Terra 70 will remain with me for both beach work and as a backup. You can't beat the 6" HF DD in streams and in bodies of water either and it's a more suitable machine for coins and beaches (obviously)

Re: Tracking - I think most of us use it now. I set the GB and then activate tracking. If I change soils rapidly, I turn GB off and then back on again since it scans the ground very fast for three seconds to essentially re-balance itself accuratelty. By leaving it on, the detector is capable of reading the soil you're scanning and adjusting itself for all the minor changes. Just remember to turn tracking OFF when you find a target or the machine will quickly balance itself to the target and you may lose your signal.

I use tracking to GB,its lighting fast.Let it track for about 2-3 seconds, hit track again and you done.Sometimes I fine tune it manually afterwards.

While on the GB suject,it says to put in AM mode, but if I go to GB from the C&T mode it seems to still GB just fine.

Does it matter which mode yur in? or does it automaticlly go into AM mode?

I set mine to tracking mode and pretty much forget about it. If I have to spend a lot of time over a target, trying to separate a couple of signals or if I have to move very slowly over a signal for more than a few sweeps, then I'll turn off tracking. I turn it back on when I'm finished with that signal.

so do you use the tracking while coin hunting away from the beach or coin hunting in general. I mostly coin hunt and the ground is usually the same over all. (when I gb it reads the same almost everywhere i go)
