GB DP gets an 1869 Shield Nickel first trip!

First afternoon hunt with my Gold Bug DP at my favorite old homesite gets an 1869 Shield nickel, a personal best for me and the second coin I have ever found here. This home burnt back in the 20's so it has tons of iron nail trash which is why I wanted to try the GB DP. It has lived up to what I've read being good in iron. Especially being able to run quiet when you disc out nails. It rarely gets a high tone response or skip on a rusty nail allowing you to cover more ground. I was digging everything above iron and depth was excellent, also sensitivety to smaller items was good. I also hunted an old school house and found the nickel where my other machines suffer from EMI but the GB had almost no problem with it. The GB is easy to use and you feel confident with it quickly.

Nice shield! It is in really nice condition for such an old coin in the ground. An excellent first hunt.

Great... I found a 1968 Shield Nickel while out detecting an old wagon/freight stop in Nevada. This was back in
July 2008 while I was returning from my 60th high school class in Ely Nevada, going back to my home to California.
I was using my T2 in all metal and the nickel was on the surface and had a black coating. I did not know
what it was and rubbed and rubbed it on my pants leg, even used fine dirt to clean off the most of black coating...
It seems to be still in pretty good shape after all of my rubbing. I did not use chemicals to further clean it,
and I consider it one of my best finds due to its rarety as a find... I understand the first Shield nickel was in 1866.

I've always wanted a Shielded Nickle !!!! Great find

It was reddish brown and cruddy when I first found it. I was able to make out the date just barely. Finding it wasn't a key date I decided to clean it. I used the "Worcestershire sauce" method. Basically you just soak it in the sauce for a few hours and it comes out clean.
