GB 2 vs GB Pro with "small coils"

D&P-OR

Well-known member
For (small) gold hunting---which one of these two detectors/coils is the best choice?----The GB 2 with the 6.5" coil or the GB Pro with the 6"?-----Can someone give me a bit of info as to the pros & con--advantages/dis-advantages of these two detectors with these small coil combos?----------Thanks, Del

Well, I have both. If I am chasing the tiniest gold I grab the a Gold Bug 2. The small coil on the GB2 is a 3.5" x 6.25" concentric and at 71 kHz gives better signals on sub-grain gold than the 4.75" round DD coil on the 19 kHz Gold Bug Pro.

The Gold Bug Pro does much better on larger nuggets with the larger coils in bad ground and has full range metered target id while in all metal mode. It is by far the better all around detector. But for sniping tiny gold the GB2 has the edge.

I do not recommend one over the other. I recommend both and own both.

Tough question really. Both have their own nitch. I have to say I have neither but base on information i get from others who do have them I think I'm in the ball park here. The GB2 will find smaller gold usually, it works at a higher frequency, 71khz. The Pro works at 17 or 18 khz. The GB2 will be more sensitive to ground mineralization and tougher to use in some areas because of this. I think the pro is more user friendly. If I were new to metal detecting I would get the Pro first then add a GB2 later. The key is to learn the machine you get and learn about the ground your detecting in. Ray Mills would be one to ask and hopefully he will chime in here, he is very good with his GB Pro, but I believe he also has a GB2. I think everyone who is serious about metal detecting for gold probalby have several different detectors. I know I have several. I hope this helps.
Good luck, Wes.

Thanks guys---Not new to detecting as I started in 1975.----I just wanted to get some opinions on this, appreciate your responses & also any future responses that may be posted as well.----I said GB Pro with 6" coil when I should have said 5", sorry about that.---I knew that, just hadn't had my allotted coffee yet this morning. :)---Actually, as Steve said, that coil is like 4 3/4".------Any other info, I'm "all ears"!----------Del

Del; I have both and I like both. The Bug 2 may find a smaller flake but if its smaller than the Pro will find, it ain't worth much in gold value and I do think the Pro is deeper on a real nugget. THat being said I generally grab the Bug 2 when I hunt small gold. I like the shape of the 6" elliptical on the Bug 2 better than the 5" round on the Pro. You can buy a Pro a little cheaper and they are more available.

Thanks Darrel & I appreciate your input on this.

What REALLY rocks on the new Gold Bug Pro is the big ol'spider coil as much smoother operation and not any real loss on teeny tiny nuggets either.Good increase in depth also. Blows in the wind of past coils-how?? Don't care ,just works that a way though try one you'll be amazed.-John

Thanks John----that's the FT 11" DD coil you're talking about----or??

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS gotta luv it-never in 52+ years of detecting have I ever seen a much larger coil that is as good as a small coil for TEENIE TINY nuggets,so cool-:detecting:John

THHHHAAAANNNNKKKKSSSS-----Never in my 74+ years of livin & all these years of tectin have I ever seen such a long "YES"!-----I'm gonna try that coil for nuggies John---FOR SURE!;)----BTW, I've got that coil on my GB Pro & have done REALLY well with it relic hunting--just never gold hunted with it (yet).---Thank ya, thank ya, thank ya!---------Del

I thought I had the record, I started in 1962, LOL

I'm a 63+ year old relic myself and spend half my time lookn' fer stuff too but not always gold-now where d l did I put that screwdriver :nopity: In 61 went to Tandy Craft store and bought a Heathkit kit to construct a mighty BFO and by god them beaches in Redondo,PV,Hermosa and Manhatten were lined with gold and silver as NO beach cleaning machines in them days sooooo coooool-John

Yeah,, things were a lot different back then, all coins were silver but there was no disc. and the BFOs were not depth monsters. I can remember digging lots of foil gum wrappers. Silver coins were only good for face value, but the best thing, there was no competition. Nugget hunting was kinda the same.. Found real nuggets almost every time I went out. not lil flakes. If I had known how popular it would become I would have hunted more then. (some of the newbes got some of my gold.. LOL)
