Eight fellow club member and myself spent today with the Kansas State archeologists searching the site of a major campground on the Sante Fe Trail. They are trying to pinpoint the exact location of the Campsite where thousands camped on the trail.
Since the area is owned by a city and being converted into baseball and soccer fields, a permit from the Kansas Secretary of the Interior to recover artifacts on Public land was needed. No one was aloud to keep anything dug.
We would located, recover the item and lay it in the hole at the depth found. The Archies would number, record and chart the location of each item with GPS equipment. They asked us to recover anything we detected so we hunted in all metal. They asked for it. They had over 400 flagged items to record for the day.
Other items I found, along with a lot of square nails and wire, was 2 45 cal round balls, 22 cal LR bullet, several iron rings and a few belt buckels.
This was my first Shield Nickel and couldn't even tell the date because they want their specialist to examine it for the date. Hope it's not a 1880.
We're going back out next Saturday to work a different area at the Campsite.
